A Detroit, Michigan, man has been sentenced to 11 years in federal prison after admitting his role in a drug trafficking organization responsible for distributing large quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl throughout the Huntington, West Virginia, area, federal authorities announced.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, Lamarr Anthony Welch, 35, also known as “Joe,” was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison, followed by five years of supervised release, after pleading guilty to 11 felony drug offenses connected to a multi-defendant narcotics conspiracy.
According to court documents, Welch admitted participating in a drug trafficking organization that operated throughout the Huntington area and distributed significant quantities of methamphetamine and fentanyl between January and August 2025.
Federal prosecutors stated that Welch personally distributed approximately 651 grams of methamphetamine during multiple transactions conducted between March 3, 2025, and August 27, 2025. Court records further indicate that Welch distributed approximately 4.4 grams of fentanyl on August 27, 2025, as part of the conspiracy.
The investigation culminated on September 10, 2025, when law enforcement officers arrested Welch at a trailer in Huntington that investigators identified as a storage location used by the drug trafficking organization. During the operation, authorities seized approximately 3.95 kilograms of methamphetamine, 266 grams of fentanyl, and a loaded firearm.
Federal authorities consider fentanyl one of the most dangerous narcotics currently fueling the nation’s overdose crisis. Because fentanyl is significantly more potent than morphine and heroin, even relatively small quantities can prove fatal. Methamphetamine also continues to present a major public safety threat due to its highly addictive nature and its association with violent crime, overdose deaths, and organized criminal activity.
Welch pleaded guilty to multiple federal offenses, including conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine and fentanyl, several counts of methamphetamine distribution, aiding and abetting methamphetamine distribution, and distribution of fentanyl.
Court records state that Welch conducted drug transactions arranged by or at the direction of three co-defendants: Joshua Willie McCarver, also known as “TJ,” Darnell Marice McCarver, also known as “WAP,” and Geon Lavell Henderson, also known as “Money.”
Welch is one of six defendants who have pleaded guilty following a federal indictment alleging their participation in the drug trafficking organization. Federal court records show that Darnell Marice McCarver was previously sentenced to 12 years in federal prison, while Geon Lavell Henderson also received a 12-year federal prison sentence. Joshua Willie McCarver is currently scheduled to be sentenced on October 13, 2026.
Federal prosecutors noted that indictments remain pending against three additional defendants. The charges against those individuals are allegations only, and they are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
During sentencing, the court determined that Welch qualified as a career offender based upon his criminal history, which includes two prior armed robbery convictions. Career offender status under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines often results in substantially enhanced sentencing ranges for defendants with multiple qualifying felony convictions.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the Cabell County Sheriff’s Office, the Mason County Sheriff’s Office, and the Huntington Police Department.
The sentence was imposed by United States District Judge Robert C. Chambers.
The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Courtney L. Finney.
Federal officials stated that the prosecution forms part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative that coordinates federal law enforcement resources to investigate and prosecute transnational criminal organizations, drug trafficking networks, violent offenders, and other organized criminal enterprises operating within the United States.
