A Crookston, Minnesota, man has pleaded guilty in federal court to attempting to produce child sexual abuse material following an investigation that uncovered evidence of child exploitation, online communications involving the exchange of illegal material, and the attempted creation of sexually explicit images involving a young child.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Minnesota, Joseph Robert Thompson pleaded guilty on June 29, 2026, before United States District Judge Nancy E. Brasel to one count of attempted production of child sexual abuse material.
According to court documents, on October 13, 2024, Thompson attempted to create sexually explicit images involving a child who was six years old at the time for the purpose of producing visual depictions of sexually explicit conduct.
Federal investigators stated that Thompson first come to the attention of law enforcement on August 28, 2024, after allegedly soliciting illicit images from an undercover law enforcement officer posing online as a 14-year-old minor. The undercover investigation ultimately led authorities to expand the case, resulting in Thompson’s arrest on October 15, 2024.
During a court-authorized search of Thompson’s residence, investigators seized multiple electronic devices that allegedly contained additional evidence, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and communications between Thompson and an adult male residing in Missouri. According to prosecutors, the communications included discussions involving the sexual abuse of children and the exchange of child sexual abuse material.
Investigators further allege that Thompson admitted to both distributing and receiving child sexual abuse material between August and October 2024.
Child sexual abuse material offenses remain among the highest investigative priorities for federal law enforcement agencies. These investigations frequently involve digital forensic examinations of computers, mobile devices, cloud storage accounts, messaging applications, and internet communications in an effort to identify offenders, rescue victims, and prevent additional exploitation. Because digital evidence can span multiple jurisdictions, investigations often require close coordination among local, state, and federal agencies.
Attempted production of child sexual abuse material is one of the most serious federal child exploitation offenses prosecuted by the Department of Justice. Federal law establishes severe mandatory penalties because the creation of such material directly victimizes children and permanently preserves records of their abuse. Even when production is attempted but not completed, federal prosecutors may pursue significant criminal penalties based on the conduct involved.
The investigation was conducted by the Crookston Police Department, the Polk County Sheriff’s Office, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Minnesota Child Exploitation Task Force.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Kristian Weir.
The prosecution was also brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative established in 2006 to combat the sexual exploitation of children. The program combines the resources of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies to investigate internet-based child exploitation offenses, identify victims, apprehend offenders, and prosecute those responsible for crimes involving the exploitation of children.
Thompson’s conviction carries a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison and a maximum sentence of 30 years. If sentenced to prison, he will also face a minimum of five years and up to a lifetime of supervised release following his incarceration.
A sentencing hearing will be scheduled at a later date.

Sadly, this man sounds like a sick individual who needs deliverance from his bondage. It appears he will get a good amount of time to think about his actions. As all believers know, there may be temporal consequences to sin that can’t be easily undone or can’t be undone at all. (Something another fellow blogger and I discussed recently.) Our Bible is full of examples. Who knows the ramifications these crimes will have on their victims? Even if it is too late for this man in some ways temporally, his soul hangs in the balance. I pray that he seeks help from the right source. I am really concerned for the victims here. I pray that their minds are healed of the abuse that occurred and that they are able to live a normal life.

None of us can merit heaven because we have all sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. Even a person who has done horrid things can be forgiven by God because of Jesus has done for us. At the same time, just like David, the personal ramifications of sin can last temporally until we die and sometimes they are very serious.
