FBI Renews Appeal in 12-Year Disappearance of American Writer Paul Edwin Overby Jr. in Afghanistan

WASHINGTON — The FBI Washington Field Office has renewed its public appeal for information regarding the disappearance of American freelance writer Paul Edwin Overby Jr., whose whereabouts remain unknown twelve years after vanishing in Afghanistan during research activities connected to a planned book project.

Overby disappeared in May 2014 while traveling through Khost Province, Afghanistan, an area historically associated with militant activity, cross-border insurgent movement, and long-running instability near the Afghanistan–Pakistan frontier.

According to federal authorities, Overby had been conducting independent research before indicating plans to continue his work in neighboring Pakistan shortly before his disappearance.

The FBI stated investigators and intelligence personnel have continued pursuing leads tied to the case for more than a decade.

“For over a decade, FBI agents and analysts have worked tirelessly to find Paul and bring him home,” said FBI Washington Field Office Assistant Director in Charge Darren Cox. “We will continue to coordinate with partner agencies and pursue all credible leads until we can provide Paul’s family with the answers they’ve waited 12 years to hear.”

The case remains one of several unresolved disappearances involving American citizens operating within conflict regions tied to insurgent activity, extremist organizations, tribal smuggling corridors, and politically unstable territories across South and Central Asia.

Khost Province, where Overby was last known to have traveled, has historically served as a strategic corridor connecting eastern Afghanistan to Pakistan’s tribal border regions. For years, intelligence and military operations in the area focused heavily on insurgent transit routes, militant safe havens, kidnapping networks, and cross-border extremist operations.

Federal authorities have not publicly confirmed whether Overby’s disappearance was tied to criminal abduction, militant activity, opportunistic kidnapping, or another cause.

The FBI first publicly announced a reward in May 2018 offering up to $1 million for information leading to Overby’s location, recovery, and return.

The U.S. Department of State’s Rewards for Justice program separately continues to offer an additional reward of up to $5 million connected to the case.

Federal officials confirmed both rewards remain unclaimed.

Investigators continue urging anyone with information — including individuals formerly operating in Afghanistan or Pakistan during the period surrounding Overby’s disappearance — to come forward.

Federal agencies increasingly rely on long-term intelligence analysis, digital communications tracing, financial movement reviews, human intelligence sources, and cross-agency coordination in unresolved overseas disappearance investigations involving Americans abroad.

The FBI also continues working alongside intelligence, diplomatic, and international partners to review historical information tied to unresolved missing-person and hostage-related cases originating from conflict regions.

Overby’s disappearance occurred during a period of intense regional instability in Afghanistan as insurgent violence, militant expansion, and cross-border extremist activity continued escalating throughout multiple eastern provinces.
