RAPID CITY, S.D. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation has announced a reward of up to $25,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for the January 27, 2024, murder of Alton Mesteth, a 54-year-old member of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.
According to the FBI, Mesteth was killed during the early morning hours of January 27, 2024, when an unidentified individual or individuals fired multiple gunshots from a vehicle into his residence near Kyle, South Dakota, on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation.
Federal investigators believe Mesteth was likely not the intended target of the shooting, indicating the homicide may have been the result of mistaken identity or that someone else was the intended target.
More than two years after the killing, the investigation remains active, and authorities are renewing their appeal to the public for information that could help identify those responsible.
The reward announcement is part of the FBI’s continuing efforts to resolve violent crimes in Tribal communities through Operation Steadfast Promise and Operation Not Forgotten, initiatives that dedicate additional investigative resources to violent crime, unresolved homicide investigations, violent offenses against children, gang-related crime, organized criminal activity, and fugitive apprehensions throughout Indian Country.
Operation Not Forgotten specifically focuses on advancing unresolved homicide investigations, supporting victims and their families, and pursuing offenders who have remained unidentified or evaded prosecution.
Investigators have not publicly identified any suspects in the case.
The FBI is asking anyone with information concerning the murder of Alton Mesteth to contact the FBI by calling 1-800-CALL-FBI (225-5324) or by submitting information through the FBI’s online tip system. Individuals outside the United States may also provide information through the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate.
Authorities continue to encourage anyone with knowledge of the shooting, the vehicle involved, or the identity of those responsible to come forward, regardless of how insignificant the information may appear.
The investigation remains ongoing.
