ANDERSON, S.C. — A cybersecurity disruption involving malware has affected AnMed’s computer network, forcing the nonprofit health system to close dozens of medical offices and suspend several clinical services across Upstate South Carolina and northeast Georgia.
On Sunday, July 26, AnMed confirmed the cybersecurity disruption after its facilities experienced network problems. The health system brought in third-party cybersecurity specialists and began coordinating with state and federal authorities to investigate the incident and securely restore affected systems.
AnMed has not identified the malware involved, attributed the attack to a specific threat actor or confirmed that ransomware was deployed. The organization has not announced that patient information was stolen or exposed.
The full nature and scope of the incident remain under investigation.
AnMed Medical Group offices and imaging services were closed Monday, July 27. Patients with elective procedures scheduled for Monday were being contacted directly with instructions concerning their care.
The disruption affected a wide range of medical practices, including cardiology, primary care, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, urology, vascular surgery, psychiatry and several surgical and diagnostic services.
All AnMed primary-care locations listed in the health system’s Monday operational update were closed. Imaging locations in Anderson, Cannon, Clemson and Piedmont were also closed, along with women’s diagnostic services and multiple heart and vascular diagnostic facilities.
Several essential and outpatient services continued operating despite the disruption.
AnMed’s emergency departments at the Medical Center, Cannon and Piedmont remained open Monday. Urgent-care locations in Anderson, Clemson and Greenville also continued accepting patients.
AnMed Kids Care, laboratory services, integrated therapy locations, pediatric therapy, behavioral health, pulmonary rehabilitation, lymphedema therapy, wound and hyperbaric medicine, the Medicus Surgery Center and Upstate Endoscopy remained open.
Outpatient infusion services continued on a limited basis.
AnMed said decisions involving procedures, patient transfers, diversions and other operational changes were being made according to patient-safety requirements.
The health system also coordinated with emergency medical services, regional hospitals and public-safety agencies to direct patients to appropriate care while its network remained disrupted.
The closures were significant because AnMed operates a regional health care network extending from Easley, South Carolina, to Hartwell, Georgia.
Founded in 1908, AnMed is an independent nonprofit health system licensed for 648 beds. Its network is anchored by the 495-bed AnMed Medical Center and includes four hospitals, more than 50 clinical sites and more than 60 physician practices.
The organization has approximately 620 physicians on its medical staff and about 3,600 employees serving communities across Upstate South Carolina and northeast Georgia.
AnMed’s latest operational schedule shows that most of the offices closed Monday are expected to reopen Tuesday, July 28.
Cardiology, primary care, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, gastroenterology, internal medicine, urology, vascular surgery and multiple specialty-care offices are listed as open for Tuesday.
Emergency departments, urgent-care centers, laboratory services, integrated therapy locations, Kids Care and the Medicus Surgery Center are also scheduled to remain open.
Several services will remain closed Tuesday as recovery efforts continue.
The remaining closures include AnMed Heart and Vascular Diagnostics in Anderson and Clemson, all five listed AnMed imaging locations, the Noninvasive Cardiovascular Lab, Radiation Oncology, TMS and Sleep Diagnostics, Women’s Diagnostics and the Impressions Appearance Shoppe.
Outpatient infusion services will continue operating with limitations.
The transition from widespread Monday closures to the reopening of most offices Tuesday indicates that AnMed has restored enough operational capacity to resume a large portion of its clinical services. The health system has not stated that its network has returned to full functionality.
Restoring clinical operations does not establish that the cybersecurity investigation is complete.
AnMed has not disclosed whether electronic health records, scheduling platforms, billing systems, diagnostic equipment or internal communications were directly compromised.
The organization has also not provided a timetable for completing its investigation or fully restoring the remaining closed services.
Patients should verify the status of their medical office before traveling to an appointment because operating plans may change as recovery work continues. Patients whose procedures or appointments are affected are expected to receive information directly from AnMed personnel.
AnMed thanked its physicians, nurses, advanced-practice providers, clinical teams and other employees for maintaining patient care during the response. The health system also recognized regional hospitals, emergency medical services and public-safety partners assisting with continuity of care.
Anyone experiencing a medical emergency should always call 911 first.
The incident remains an active cybersecurity and operational recovery event while AnMed continues investigating its nature and scope.
