MIDTOWN MANHATTAN, NY — August 14, 2026 — Luigi Nicholas Mangione pleaded guilty Friday to two federal stalking charges resulting in death in connection with the December 4, 2024, killing of UnitedHealthcare Chief Executive Officer Brian Thompson.
Mangione, 28, of Maryland, entered the guilty plea before U.S. District Judge Margaret M. Garnett. His sentencing is scheduled for December 18, 2026.
Mangione pleaded guilty to one count of interstate stalking resulting in death and one count of cyberstalking through the use of interstate facilities resulting in death. Each count carries a maximum potential sentence of life in federal prison. The sentence imposed will be determined by Judge Garnett.
The guilty plea followed a federal case centered on Mangione’s planning, travel, surveillance of Thompson, and use of interstate facilities before the killing.
In the months leading up to December 4, 2024, Mangione developed and executed a plan to kill Thompson because of Thompson’s position as chief executive officer of UnitedHealthcare. Mangione traveled from outside New York to New York City for the attack.
The original federal complaint stated that Mangione arrived in New York City on November 24, 2024, more than one week before Thompson’s death. He conducted surveillance around the hotel where Thompson was staying and the Midtown Manhattan venue selected for UnitedHealthcare’s investor conference.
Mangione used false identification to check into an Upper West Side hostel. The identification later became part of the evidence connecting his activities in New York City to his arrest in Pennsylvania.
On the morning of December 4, Mangione positioned himself near the investor conference venue and waited for Thompson to arrive. At approximately 6:45 a.m., Mangione approached Thompson from behind and shot him multiple times, causing his death. Mangione then fled the area.
Law enforcement agencies launched a multistate search supported by surveillance evidence, investigative technology, public assistance, and traditional police work.
Five days after the killing, Mangione was recognized inside a fast-food restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. Officers from the Altoona Police Department responded and arrested him on December 9, 2024.
Mangione possessed a false driver’s license that he had previously used while in New York City. The original federal complaint also identified a 9mm pistol and a sound suppressor consistent with the weapon used to kill Thompson among the items recovered during his arrest. Authorities recovered additional evidence connecting Mangione to the killing.
U.S. Attorney Jamie McDonald said the guilty plea represented accountability for the stalking and killing of Thompson. McDonald also credited the federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies that worked to secure the plea.
FBI New York Assistant Director in Charge James C. Barnacle, Jr. said the guilty plea could not erase the crime or the grief suffered by Thompson’s family. He stated that the FBI and its partners continued their work until Mangione was brought to justice.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica S. Tisch credited New York City detectives with pursuing leads, using sophisticated technology, and conducting extensive police work to identify Mangione and build the case. Tisch also rejected attempts to portray violence or murder as a legitimate message or cause.
The investigation involved the FBI’s Violent Crime Task Force, the New York City Police Department, the Altoona Police Department, and special agents assigned to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
The case is being prosecuted through the Violent Organizations and Crime Unit of the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Dominic A. Gentile, Jun Xiang, Alexandra Messiter, and Thomas John Wright are responsible for the prosecution.
