THE HAGUE, Netherlands — Dutch authorities have dismantled an alleged international cryptocurrency investment fraud network accused of defrauding tens of thousands of victims worldwide through sophisticated fake investment platforms that investigators believe generated more than €100 million (approximately $114 million) per month.
According to Dutch police, the criminal organization operated as a highly structured international enterprise since at least 2021, using approximately 24 call centers across multiple countries and employing more than 700 individuals who allegedly posed as professional financial advisers and investment specialists.
Investigators allege the organization carried out long-term “investment fraud” schemes by cultivating relationships with prospective victims over weeks or months before convincing them to invest in fraudulent cryptocurrency trading platforms.
Authorities say the operation was designed to appear legitimate, with employees using false identities, concealed locations, and technical measures intended to hide their activities from investigators.
Alleged Mastermind Arrested
At the center of the investigation is a 46-year-old man holding Israeli and Polish citizenship, whom Dutch authorities describe as a well-known figure within the cybercrime community.
The suspect was arrested in May 2026 at an airport in Poland after arriving on a flight from Dubai. Following his arrest, he was extradited to the Netherlands, where a judge ordered him held in pretrial detention while criminal proceedings continue.
Dutch police have not publicly released the suspect’s identity.
Investigators allege the suspect’s technical expertise played a significant role in helping the criminal organization conceal its infrastructure and avoid law enforcement detection for several years.
International Arrests Continue
Authorities also announced the arrests of:
- Two Dutch nationals.
- One Belgian national residing in Cyprus.
- One additional suspect in Belgium.
- One Dutch national located in Greece.
Dutch police stated the investigation remains active and additional arrests are possible as investigators continue examining the organization’s international operations.
How the Alleged Scheme Worked
According to investigators, victims were initially persuaded to make relatively small investments through online cryptocurrency trading platforms that appeared to be legitimate.
Authorities allege the fraudulent platforms displayed fabricated profits and investment gains, encouraging victims to believe their investments were performing exceptionally well.
As victims gained confidence in the apparent returns, they were persuaded to deposit increasingly larger sums of money.
Investigators say the displayed profits never existed.
Rather than investing the funds in cryptocurrency or financial markets, authorities allege the organization diverted victim payments directly to members of the criminal enterprise, frequently using cryptocurrency transactions to complicate efforts to trace the money.
Law enforcement officials describe the operation as a classic advance-investment fraud in which fictitious account balances and fabricated trading activity were used to encourage additional investments.
Millions Lost
Dutch police estimate victims in the Netherlands alone suffered losses approaching €25 million (approximately $28.6 million).
Authorities believe tens of thousands of victims worldwide may have been affected.
Investigators said many victims remained unaware they had been defrauded until contacted by law enforcement, allowing authorities to prevent some individuals from sending additional money.
Police also reported that the financial losses extended well beyond monetary damage, leaving many victims facing severe emotional distress and financial hardship.
Victim statements released during the investigation describe individuals losing retirement savings, family finances, and long-term investments. Some victims reportedly experienced significant emotional trauma after discovering the investment platforms and reported profits had been entirely fabricated.
Authorities continue working with international law enforcement partners to identify additional victims, recover criminal proceeds where possible, and determine the full scope of the alleged fraud operation.
The investigation remains ongoing.
