MOTHER AND SON CHARGED IN ZUNI PUEBLO ASSAULT THAT LEFT ONE VICTIM CRITICALLY INJURED

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A mother and her 18-year-old son are facing federal charges following an alleged assault at a residence on the Zuni Pueblo in which two victims were stabbed and one suffered life-threatening injuries.

Zachary Booqua, 18, and his mother, Kayla Marie Concho, 36, both enrolled members of the Zuni Pueblo Indian Tribe, have been charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury.

According to court documents, the charges stem from an incident that occurred on June 14, 2026, while Booqua, Concho, Jane Doe, and John Doe were drinking alcohol at a residence on the Zuni Pueblo.

Federal authorities allege that an argument escalated into a physical attack when Booqua knocked John Doe unconscious and began repeatedly punching him in the face.

Jane Doe allegedly attempted to intervene by pulling Booqua away from John Doe. Court documents state that Booqua and Concho then turned their attention toward Jane Doe and began punching her in the face.

The confrontation escalated further when Booqua allegedly stabbed John Doe. Federal authorities reported that one victim suffered life-threatening injuries. The official court account did not provide further information regarding the victim’s medical condition or recovery.

Booqua and Concho are each charged with assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury. If convicted of the current charges, each defendant faces up to 20 years in federal prison.

The charges remain allegations. No trial date or additional information concerning the defendants’ custody status was included in the federal announcement.

First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and Justin A. Garris, Special Agent in Charge of the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Albuquerque Field Office, announced the charges.

The Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI’s Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Zuni Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Seth Teleky is prosecuting the case.

A criminal complaint establishes the accusations being brought against the defendants but does not constitute evidence of guilt. Booqua and Concho are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
