CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — A 27-year-old Houston resident has been sentenced to an additional two years in federal prison after pleading guilty to forcibly assaulting a federal correctional officer at the Three Rivers Federal Correctional Institution.
Melvin Jones pleaded guilty on April 16 to the federal offense stemming from the September 2025 assault.
U.S. District Judge Nelva Gonzales Ramos ordered Jones to serve two years in federal prison. The sentence will run consecutively to the prison term he is already serving, meaning the additional two-year sentence will begin only after his existing sentence has been completed.
Jones was also ordered to serve two years of supervised release following his imprisonment.
During the sentencing hearing, the court received evidence that Jones had participated in three additional altercations with other inmates since entering his guilty plea. That information was presented as the court considered the sentence for the assault on the correctional officer.
Jones was incarcerated at the Three Rivers Federal Correctional Institution in 2025. The federal facility is located in Three Rivers, Texas, within the Southern District of Texas.
The assault occurred on September 25, 2025, after a federal correctional officer suspected Jones of possessing a contraband cellular phone and attempted to search him.
When the officer tried to retrieve the suspected contraband device, Jones resisted and repeatedly punched the officer in the head and neck.
Additional correctional officers responded to the confrontation, restrained Jones, and separated him from the injured officer. The officer sustained abrasions and soreness to the head and neck as a result of the attack.
The FBI conducted the investigation.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Ashley Martin and Patrick Overman prosecuted the case for the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas.
