LOS ANGELES, Calif. — August 21, 2026 — The FBI has returned 48 cultural artifacts to representatives of the Egyptian government following an investigation that determined the objects originated in Egypt and had no record of lawful removal from the country.
The repatriation ceremony was held at the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office and included artifacts from the Pharaonic, Roman, and Coptic periods, including carved figures, amulets, tomb equipment, and other cultural property.
The return was announced by Patrick Grandy, Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office.
Grandy was joined at the ceremony by His Excellency Ambassador Dr. Hossam Eldeen Aly, Consul General of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Los Angeles; the FBI Legal Attaché assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Cairo; members of the FBI Art Crime Team; representatives from the U.S. Department of State; the U.S. Attorney’s Office; and the FBI’s International Operations Division.
According to the FBI, assistance from the U.S. Department of State, antiquities experts, and the FBI Legal Attaché in Cairo helped confirm that all 48 objects originated in Egypt and should be returned to the Egyptian people.
The investigation also included analysis from the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which identified the objects as authentic Egyptian cultural property and found no record showing they had been lawfully removed from Egypt.
Investigators developed information indicating the artifacts had been illicitly trafficked out of Egypt.
The person suspected of trafficking the objects is now deceased, but the case has not been closed. The FBI said investigators are continuing efforts to identify potential co-conspirators and locate additional cultural artifacts that may also have been trafficked illegally.
That ongoing portion of the case is significant because cultural-property trafficking can continue through multiple owners and transactions long after an artifact originally leaves its country of origin. The FBI noted that illegally removed objects may remain undiscovered for years or decades and can eventually reach individuals or institutions that had no direct involvement with the original trafficker.
Artifacts may also be inherited, resold, transferred through collections, or change hands repeatedly before authorities determine that their export or possession violated applicable laws.
The FBI is urging collectors, dealers, institutions, and members of the public to examine the provenance of cultural objects carefully and report suspected looted property.
Grandy said the recovered objects belong with the people of Egypt and credited the FBI Art Crime Team and its diplomatic, academic, and law-enforcement partners with helping preserve and restore cultural heritage.
Ambassador Dr. Hossam Eldeen Aly described the artifacts as an integral part of Egypt’s history and cultural heritage and expressed appreciation to the United States for facilitating their return. He also said Egypt looks forward to continued bilateral cooperation in cultural matters.
The FBI warned that illicit trafficking in cultural property is not limited to disputes over ownership or the commercial art market.
According to the Bureau, cultural-property trafficking can provide funding to transnational criminal and terrorist organizations while undermining the integrity of the U.S. art and antiquities market.
The United States and Egypt have maintained a formal cultural-property agreement since 2016. That agreement allows the United States to impose import restrictions on specified categories of Egyptian archaeological and ethnological material and establishes a framework for cooperation involving identification, interdiction, and return of trafficked cultural property.
The agreement also supports lawful cultural, educational, and scientific exchanges between the two countries.
The August 21 transfer represents one part of a much larger repatriation effort.
According to the FBI, U.S. law enforcement has returned more than 5,000 cultural artifacts to Egypt during the past decade.
Repatriation does not always depend upon a criminal prosecution. Some investigations result in charges or prosecutions, while others involve conduct for which the statute of limitations has expired. In either circumstance, recovered cultural property can still be returned to its country of origin when authorities establish rightful ownership.
The FBI Art Crime Team was established in 2004 in response to increasing cultural-property crime around the world.
The specialized national team includes agents stationed in major U.S. cities who are trained to investigate theft, looting, trafficking, fraud, and other crimes involving art and culturally significant property.
Two Art Crime Team members are stationed in Los Angeles.
Since its creation, the team has recovered more than 20,000 items collectively valued at more than $1 billion, according to the FBI.
The Bureau also maintains the National Stolen Art File, a database containing approximately 5,000 listings involving fine art, collectibles, and other uniquely identifiable objects with cultural value that have been reported stolen by law-enforcement agencies in the United States and abroad.
The FBI recommends that prospective buyers research an object’s ownership and provenance before purchasing it and consult available stolen-art and import-restriction databases when dealing with antiquities or culturally significant property.
The investigation that resulted in the return of the 48 Egyptian artifacts was conducted by the FBI Art Crime Team and remains ongoing.
No charges against additional individuals were announced in connection with the August 21 repatriation. The FBI’s investigation continues to focus on identifying possible co-conspirators and locating other cultural property that may have been illicitly removed from Egypt.
