POLK COUNTY WOMAN PLEADS GUILTY TO SMUGGLING METHAMPHETAMINE INTO FEDERAL PRISON FOR INMATE HUSBAND

OCALA, Fla. — A Polk County woman has pleaded guilty in federal court to possessing 5 grams or more of methamphetamine with intent to distribute after admitting she carried the drug into a federal prison during a visit with her incarcerated husband.

Samantha Calvente, 44, of Winter Haven, pleaded guilty to possession of 5 grams or more of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.

She faces a minimum penalty of five years and up to 40 years in federal prison. A sentencing date has not yet been set.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the plea.

According to federal court records, Calvente traveled to the Coleman Federal Correctional Complex, or FCC Coleman, in Sumter County on August 21, 2022, to visit her husband, identified in court records by the initials R.C., who was incarcerated at the facility.

When entering the prison, Calvente told correctional officers that she was not carrying prohibited items, including narcotics.

Once inside the visitation room, prison staff observed her retrieve an unknown object from her waistband and place it between her legs.

Correctional officers promptly escorted Calvente out of the visitation room. Before officers conducted a search, Calvente handed them an item wrapped in black latex material.

Authorities determined the package contained more than 24 grams of methamphetamine.

Calvente subsequently admitted that the incident was not the first time she had introduced contraband into prison facilities for her husband.

Introducing narcotics into a correctional institution creates risks that extend beyond simple possession. Drugs brought into prisons can be redistributed among inmates, used as internal currency, tied to extortion or violence, and contribute to overdoses and other security threats inside institutions.

Federal prisons maintain screening procedures for visitors because contraband can enter facilities through multiple routes, including visitors, mail, compromised staff, outside drops, or coordinated smuggling schemes. The amount recovered from Calvente also matters legally.

Her guilty plea involves possession with intent to distribute 5 grams or more of methamphetamine, and federal law exposes her to a sentencing range beginning at five years and extending to 40 years in prison.

Calvente’s husband was not identified by full name in the Justice Department announcement, and the release does not state whether he has been charged in connection with the methamphetamine recovered during the August 2022 visit.

The case was investigated jointly by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Hannah Watson and Anthony C. Marek for the Middle District of Florida.

Calvente has now admitted responsibility for the federal drug offense. Her case moves next to sentencing, where the court will determine how much time she will serve within the statutory range.
