PUTNAM COUNTY MAN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN SIX YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR FENTANYL DISTRIBUTION

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A Putnam County man has been sentenced to more than six years in federal prison for three separate fentanyl sales in Charleston, each involving more than 40 grams of a mixture containing the powerful synthetic opioid.

Demetrius Fitzgerald Green, also known as “D,” 42, of Scott Depot, was sentenced to six years and two months in federal prison, followed by four years of supervised release, for three counts of distribution of 40 grams or more of a mixture containing fentanyl.

U.S. District Judge Irene C. Berger imposed the sentence.

According to court documents and statements made in court, Green sold quantities of fentanyl exceeding 40 grams during three separate transactions in Charleston on February 18, February 27, and March 18, 2026.

Federal investigators ultimately determined that Green was responsible for distributing just under 400 grams of fentanyl during the broader investigation.

Fentanyl remains one of the most dangerous drugs in the illicit narcotics market because of its extreme potency and the difficulty users may face in determining how much fentanyl is present in an illegally manufactured substance. Even small variations in concentration can substantially increase overdose risk.

Green was one of eight individuals indicted following a federal investigation into fentanyl trafficking in the Charleston area.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of West Virginia, four defendants pleaded guilty in the primary indictment, while another individual pleaded guilty to separate charges that arose from the same investigation.

The main indictment remains pending against one defendant, and another defendant is deceased.

The remaining pending charges have not been adjudicated. A criminal indictment represents a formal accusation, and a defendant whose charges remain unresolved is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

Green’s case is different in legal status because he has already been convicted and sentenced on the fentanyl distribution counts.

Federal prosecutors noted that Green’s criminal history includes prior convictions for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and battery.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Metropolitan Drug Enforcement Network Team, or MDENT.

MDENT is a multi-agency narcotics enforcement organization composed of the Charleston Police Department, Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Nitro Police Department, St. Albans Police Department, and South Charleston Police Department.

The structure of the investigation reflects the role regional drug task forces can play when narcotics distribution crosses municipal and county jurisdictions. By combining investigators, intelligence, surveillance, and enforcement resources, participating agencies can track trafficking activity that may not remain confined to a single community.

The case centered on fentanyl distribution in the Charleston area, with Green’s three documented sales occurring over approximately one month in early 2026.

Each transaction involved more than 40 grams of a fentanyl-containing mixture, placing the conduct within a serious federal drug-trafficking framework.

Investigators ultimately attributed just under 400 grams of fentanyl to Green, substantially more than the minimum 40-gram threshold associated with each of the three distribution counts.

United States Attorney Moore Capito announced the sentence and credited the FBI and MDENT for their investigative work.

Assistant United States Attorney Jeremy B. Wolfe prosecuted the case.

Green will serve his federal prison term before beginning the four-year period of supervised release imposed by the court.

His sentencing represents one completed prosecution within a larger federal investigation that has produced multiple guilty pleas and remains pending against one defendant in the main indictment.
