TAMPA, FLORIDA — Two Florida men have been sentenced to lengthy federal prison terms for their roles in a conspiracy to distribute 400 grams or more of fentanyl, including directing drug trafficking activity while incarcerated.
Leundro Childs, 42, of Tampa, was sentenced to 19 years and 7 months in federal prison, while Edilberto Mojica, 41, of Polk County, received 24 years and 4 months. Both men had previously pleaded guilty.
The sentences were imposed by U.S. District Judge John L. Badalamenti.
The court also ordered Childs to forfeit a HiPoint rifle, magazines, and assorted ammunition that federal prosecutors said were used to facilitate the offenses.
According to court documents, Mojica was already serving a sentence in the Florida Department of Corrections when he instructed Childs and another co-conspirator to travel to Georgia to obtain large quantities of fentanyl and transport the drugs back for distribution in the Middle District of Florida.
The conspiracy continued after Childs was arrested on unrelated narcotics possession charges.
Federal prosecutors said Childs then directed the continued movement and distribution of fentanyl from custody, extending the trafficking operation despite his arrest.
Investigators later conducted an undercover purchase involving members of the conspiracy. The investigation ultimately led to the recovery of more than 1,500 grams of fentanyl, along with two firearms and materials used to package narcotics for sale.
The amount of fentanyl recovered significantly exceeded the 400-gram threshold charged in the conspiracy.
Both defendants pleaded guilty, meaning their criminal responsibility for the conspiracy was established before sentencing rather than remaining at the allegation stage.
United States Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe for the Middle District of Florida announced the sentences.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office investigated the case.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Michael A. Peterson and Candace Garcia Rich.
