Thank you for reading or listening to The Realist Juggernaut. Independent journalism should be accessible to everyone.
There are moments when public officials are expected to understand the gravity of where they are standing. A 9/11 memorial is one of those moments.
During the 25th anniversary remembrance of the September 11 attacks, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Zohran Mamdani were captured smiling and laughing together during the ceremony. Whatever conversation preceded that moment should never have happened in the first place, especially during the reading of the names, and that image was presented to the families, survivors, first responders, millions of Americans, and people around the world watching.
There is a time for laughter. There is a time for politics. There is a time for casual conversation.
A memorial honoring the 2,977 innocent people murdered on September 11, 2001—many of whom were never recovered—is not that time.
Twenty-five years have passed, yet countless families still carry the loss of husbands, wives, children, parents, friends, firefighters, police officers, emergency workers, and ordinary Americans who never came home. First responders and others exposed to the destruction continue to live with illnesses connected to that day.
Public officials know cameras are present. They know the world is watching. More importantly, they know why everyone has gathered.
This is not about determining what was said between them. It is about conduct and basic decorum.
When people around you are mourning one of the darkest days in American history, laughing openly creates an image that should never have existed.
Americans can disagree on politics, policy, elections, ideology, and personalities. Respect for the dead should not require political agreement.
At a memorial, there is one responsibility above all others:
Show respect.
What happened was disgraceful, distasteful, and completely out of place.
They should have known better.

Spot on John!
Thank you, Michael! I appreciate that very much.
You’re welcome. On another note, I’ve just read an account of Donald Trump falling asleep at the Pentagon Memorial service. To me, that’s just as bad and I won’t make any excuses for either.
A very strong reminder that some moments demand a special kind of silence, dignity, and respect.
Whatever the political differences or personal circumstances, a 9/11 memorial is fundamentally about remembering the lives lost and honoring the families, survivors, first responders, and countless others whose lives were changed forever. During such a solemn ceremony, public officials carry an even greater responsibility because their conduct is seen by so many.
Thank you very much. Very well said, and I appreciate you taking the time to share that. Respect, dignity, and remembrance should always come first in moments like that.
