To Our Readers and Listeners,

You may have noticed several changes across our pages and posts. We have been working behind the scenes on these new features for quite a while, and we are excited to finally make them available to everyone.

A while back, a few readers with reading disabilities reached out and asked if we could add a way to listen to our articles instead of having to read every word on the screen. We never forgot that request. As we all know, TRJ articles can get pretty long, and getting through an entire article can be difficult for someone who struggles with reading. We wanted those readers to experience our work too. We thought that was a damn good idea—so we built it.

You can now listen to TRJ articles directly from the website. The new reader lets you pause, resume, stop, change the reading speed, fast-forward or rewind using the position slider, and choose from the voices available on your device. There are no MP3 files to download and no separate app to install. Just press Listen and let it read.

This reader is new, so there may still be a few bugs that need to be ironed out. We have tested it extensively, and it is working very well for release. If you experience a problem, please let us know so we can continue improving it.

We have spent a lot of time teaching it what belongs to the article and what does not. It skips our advertising area, sponsor notice, download references, credit lines, links, videos, maps, players, dashboards, and visualization boxes so it can concentrate on the actual story from beginning to end. The voice is browser-based, so we have no control over how it may sound. Some browsers offer more advanced voices, while others, including Safari, have more limited options. Nonetheless, the reader works. We were more than happy to take the time to build something that can benefit everyone, especially those with disabilities.

This was not the only upgrade. We improved our sponsor system, rebuilt parts of the TRJ Ads experience, updated our advertising packages, strengthened our payment system, and cleaned up several areas of the website. A few business deals also worked out in our favor, putting us in a position to lower our advertising prices.

A one-slot advertising package is now $47 per month, or $451.20 per year with 20% off. Our two-slot package is $87 per month, or $835.20 per year with 20% off.

These are permanent prices—not temporary promotional rates. They are locked in for good, and we will never raise them. We have brought the cost down as far as we sustainably can while continuing to provide this level of advertising. This is our lowest price, and it is here to stay.

Many of the improvements we make begin with a reader bringing something to our attention. We care about people, and while we may not be able to act on every request right away, we do listen. When we can build something that genuinely helps, we do.

Not everyone reads or navigates a website in the same way. If this new reader helps someone finish an article they might otherwise have had to leave, then every hour we spent building it was worth it.
