TWO CHINESE NATIONALS INDICTED IN ST. LOUIS IN NATURALIZATION AND FIREARMS CASE

ST. LOUIS, Missouri — September 17, 2026 — Two Chinese nationals have been indicted in federal court in St. Louis on charges involving an alleged false statement in a naturalization matter and separate firearms offenses, including allegations tied to a U.S. Air Force application and the purchase and possession of a handgun.

Biqi “Ashley” Huang, 25, and Wentian Du, 35, were indicted September 9 in the Eastern District of Missouri. Both surrendered to authorities on September 17, appeared in federal court, and pleaded not guilty. Huang faces one count of making a false statement in a naturalization proceeding and one count of fraudulent acquisition of a firearm. Du faces one count of being an alien in possession of a firearm.

According to the indictment, Huang is accused of making a false statement under oath in connection with a naturalization matter between August 1, 2025, and July 27, 2026. She is also accused of making a false statement to a firearm dealer on May 28, 2026, during the acquisition of a firearm. Du is accused of unlawfully possessing a firearm between June 1 and August 26, 2026.

Additional allegations appear in federal motions seeking to detain both defendants pending trial. Those motions state that Huang entered the United States on a student visa on July 13, 2023, and attended graduate school in St. Louis. Prosecutors allege that she married on May 22, 2024, and later obtained lawful permanent resident status after misrepresenting the status of that marriage during an October 14, 2025 interview and in her permanent residency application. Those allegations have not been proven at trial.

The detention motion concerning Du states that he received a B1/B2 nonimmigrant visa in September 2022 and entered the United States on October 2, 2022. Prosecutors say he applied for asylum roughly one year later.

Federal prosecutors further allege that Huang moved to New York in June 2026 and met Du. The government claims she later applied to join the U.S. Air Force and told a recruiter that she wanted to obtain citizenship as quickly as possible, then divorce and marry Du. That claim comes from the detention motion and remains an allegation rather than an established fact.

The Air Force application forms an important part of the government’s detention argument, but the indictment itself does not charge Huang with an offense involving military service, espionage, or national security. The criminal counts announced by prosecutors concern the alleged naturalization statement and firearm acquisition. Du’s charge concerns alleged firearm possession.

According to the government’s motions, FBI agents determined during the investigation that Du attempted to purchase a firearm on October 18, 2025. The purchase was denied, and prosecutors say Du was informed of the reason for that denial. Investigators allege that Du later rented firearms on at least 13 occasions.

The government also alleges that Du’s credit card was used on May 29, 2026, to purchase a 9mm pistol. Prosecutors contend that Huang completed the required purchase paperwork and falsely represented that she was the actual buyer of the firearm. That allegation forms part of the firearm charge against Huang and remains subject to proof in federal court.

The distinction between the allegations in the indictment and the additional claims contained in detention motions is significant. An indictment represents a formal accusation approved by a grand jury. A detention motion can contain additional factual assertions offered by prosecutors as they argue whether a defendant should remain in custody before trial. Neither document constitutes a finding of guilt.

If convicted, Huang faces up to five years in prison on the naturalization-related charge, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. The firearm charges against Huang and Du each carry potential penalties of up to 15 years in federal prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. Actual sentences, if convictions occur, would be determined by the court under federal law and the applicable sentencing framework.

The FBI investigated the case with assistance from the U.S. Air Force Office of Special Investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Colleen Lang is prosecuting the case for the Eastern District of Missouri.

The case brings together two distinct areas of federal law: immigration-related representations made during the naturalization process and restrictions governing firearm acquisition and possession by certain noncitizens. Prosecutors are alleging that those areas intersected through Huang and Du’s conduct, but the government must still prove each charged offense beyond a reasonable doubt.

Both defendants have pleaded not guilty. At this stage, the charges against Biqi “Ashley” Huang and Wentian Du remain accusations, and both are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in federal court.
