FRESNO, CALIFORNIA — A 27-year-old Oakland man has pleaded guilty to federal sex trafficking charges after using social media to establish contact with a minor, arranging her transportation to California, and exploiting her through commercial sex activities in Oakland and San Francisco. Federal prosecutors confirmed that Keynin McGee entered his guilty plea on October 13, 2026, in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of California.
The guilty plea was announced October 14 by the United States Department of Justice. McGee faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 10 years in federal prison and a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment. His sentencing hearing is scheduled for January 19, 2027, before U.S. District Judge Jennifer L. Thurston.
According to court documents, McGee first contacted the minor victim through Instagram in 2021. The two communicated for several months before McGee purchased a bus ticket for her to travel and meet him in person.
After the victim arrived, McGee picked her up at the bus station, purchased clothing for her, and transported her to a hotel. He subsequently posted photographs of the minor on an online platform commonly used to advertise commercial sexual services.
McGee then transported the victim to outdoor locations in Oakland and San Francisco known for commercial sex activity. He directed her to approach potential buyers traveling in passing vehicles and solicit commercial sex transactions.
As a result of McGee’s conduct, the minor was subjected to commercial sexual exploitation involving multiple buyers.
The case demonstrates how social media communication can become part of the recruitment process in child sex trafficking offenses. Online platforms allow offenders to develop contact with minors before arranging travel or in-person meetings, creating opportunities for exploitation beyond the initial digital interaction.
In this case, the progression from Instagram conversations to purchased transportation, hotel accommodations, online advertising, and commercial sexual activity formed the sequence of conduct described in the federal prosecution.
Federal law specifically addresses the commercial sexual exploitation of minors under 18 U.S.C. § 1591. The statute prohibits qualifying acts of recruiting, enticing, transporting, providing, obtaining, maintaining, patronizing, or soliciting a person for commercial sex when the statutory requirements are satisfied.
When the victim is younger than 18, prosecutors are not required to establish the same force, fraud, or coercion elements that generally apply to adult sex trafficking offenses. The involvement of a minor in qualifying commercial sex trafficking conduct is sufficient to trigger the statute’s protections when its other elements are met.
The law recognizes that children cannot legally consent to commercial sexual exploitation. A minor’s apparent cooperation, prior communications with an offender, or participation in activities arranged by a trafficker does not eliminate the criminal responsibility established by federal trafficking law.
A. Tysen Duva, Assistant Attorney General of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, condemned the exploitation of children for financial gain and identified McGee’s guilty plea as part of the department’s continued prosecution of individuals involved in child sex trafficking.
Eric Grant, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of California, credited the coordinated work of investigators and prosecutors in bringing the case to its current resolution. Grant emphasized that protecting vulnerable victims requires sustained cooperation among law enforcement agencies and a commitment to pursuing those responsible for trafficking offenses.
The FBI’s Sacramento Field Office also participated in the investigation.
Brian Tosh, Special Agent in Charge of FBI Sacramento, described the offense as the exploitation of a child for personal gain and reaffirmed the Bureau’s commitment to investigating individuals who traffic minors.
The investigation received assistance from the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, reflecting cooperation between federal investigators and state authorities.
The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Chief Leah Branch of the Justice Department Criminal Division’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section and Assistant U.S. Attorney David Gappa for the Eastern District of California.
McGee’s guilty plea establishes his criminal responsibility for the sex trafficking offense to which he admitted guilt. The case has now moved from determining guilt to the sentencing phase, during which the federal district court will assess the applicable punishment.
Under federal sentencing procedures, Judge Thurston will consider the United States Sentencing Guidelines, the statutory sentencing range, and other factors required by federal law before determining McGee’s sentence.
The Justice Department has not publicly identified the victim, and no identifying personal information concerning the minor is necessary to describe the criminal conduct or the outcome of the case.
Federal officials continue to encourage the public to report suspected human trafficking, particularly situations involving minors who may be recruited through social media, transported for exploitation, or advertised for commercial sexual services.
The National Human Trafficking Hotline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at 1-888-373-7888, providing a reporting and assistance resource for individuals who have information about trafficking or need support.
Keynin McGee has pleaded guilty to sex trafficking a minor and is awaiting sentencing on January 19, 2027. The case highlights the role of online recruitment in child exploitation investigations and the federal criminal penalties imposed on offenders who use digital communication and transportation arrangements to facilitate the trafficking of minors.
