BALTIMORE, MARYLAND — The FBI’s Baltimore Field Office has reported significant results from coordinated law enforcement operations targeting violent crime across Maryland, including 294 arrests, 41 illegally possessed weapons recovered, and 47 missing or at-risk children located during a major federal initiative conducted throughout the summer of 2026.
In an October 20 statement, FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul outlined the results of recent investigations while highlighting substantial reductions in violent crime across the state. According to figures cited by Paul, Maryland experienced a nearly 16% decline in violent crime from 2024 to 2025, with murders falling almost 30% and robberies declining more than 30%.
The statewide reductions exceeded the national violent crime decline of 9.3% reported by the FBI for the same period. National figures also showed decreases in murder, robbery, and aggravated assault, reflecting a broad reduction in reported violent offenses. The FBI described the nationwide decline as the largest year-over-year decrease since it began estimating national crime trends in 1936.
Federal enforcement efforts continued into 2026 through Operation Summer Heat 2.0, a coordinated initiative involving FBI field offices and federal, state, and local law enforcement partners. The operation ran from June 1 through September 20, concentrating investigative personnel, intelligence resources, and enforcement operations on individuals suspected of serious violent offenses and organized criminal activity.
In Maryland, FBI Baltimore and its partner agencies reported 294 arrests, the recovery of 41 illegally possessed weapons, and the seizure of more than seven kilograms of fentanyl and cocaine. Investigators also located 47 children classified as missing or at risk. The FBI did not specify how many of those children were connected to criminal exploitation, and the reported arrests should not be interpreted as convictions.
The summer initiative followed another coordinated enforcement operation launched in January 2026. According to Paul, that earlier effort resulted in the arrests of more than 200 violent fugitives and individuals connected to organized criminal activity. Both operations involved cooperation among federal investigators, local police departments, and state law enforcement agencies.
Beyond enforcement operations, the FBI has introduced administrative changes intended to strengthen cooperation with participating agencies. One adjustment involves task force officers, who are state and local law enforcement personnel assigned to FBI investigative teams handling violent crime, cybercrime, counterterrorism, and other federal priorities.
The bureau has established a 90-day processing timeline for bringing new task force officers into its operations and reported eliminating a backlog of pending applications. The change is intended to reduce delays in assigning experienced local officers to joint investigations, allowing agencies to coordinate personnel and investigative resources more efficiently.
Paul, who has led the Baltimore Field Office for approximately one year, previously served with the Maryland State Police and held positions in the Marine Corps, Federal Air Marshal Service, and FBI. His professional background includes education at the University of Maryland and Johns Hopkins University.
Although the reported crime statistics indicate substantial statewide improvement, the figures represent offenses reported during 2025 and do not independently establish which enforcement policies or investigative initiatives produced those reductions. The major FBI operations described in Paul’s October statement occurred in 2026, after the period covered by the annual crime statistics.
The Baltimore Field Office continues to identify gun violence, drug trafficking, and organized criminal activity as enforcement priorities. Federal authorities have indicated that joint investigations, intelligence sharing, and coordinated operations with Maryland law enforcement agencies will remain central to efforts targeting violent offenders and criminal networks throughout the state.
