TEXAS MAN SENTENCED TO MORE THAN 11 YEARS IN FEDERAL PRISON FOR DISTRIBUTING CHILD SEXUAL ABUSE MATERIAL INVOLVING TODDLERS

HOUSTON, TEXAS — A 27-year-old Katy man has been sentenced to more than 11 years in federal prison for distributing and possessing child sexual abuse material (CSAM), including images and videos depicting the sexual exploitation of toddlers. The sentence follows an FBI investigation into online communications and file-sharing activity that connected the defendant to illegal material distributed through internet platforms.

Daniel Berrones received a 136-month federal prison sentence from U.S. District Judge George C. Hanks, according to an October 22, 2026, announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas. Berrones pleaded guilty on August 27 and was also ordered to pay $25,000 in restitution to identified victims.

Federal investigators initially identified the activity on February 7, 2020, after discovering child sexual abuse material being shared through Mega, an online file-storage and sharing service. Investigators traced the activity to a blog providing users with access to the material and subsequently identified an email account belonging to Berrones that had been used to distribute CSAM within an online chat group.

Authorities executed a search warrant at Berrones’ residence and examined electronic devices containing approximately 22 videos and 167 images of child sexual abuse material. Some of the files depicted toddlers, demonstrating that the material involved victims of particularly young ages.

Berrones admitted that he accessed links containing the illegal material through Discord, an online communication platform, and used internet services to distribute and store the files. He also acknowledged saving the images and videos to his electronic devices.

During sentencing, the court received additional information, including testimony describing Berrones’ participation in online chat rooms used specifically for sharing child sexual abuse material. The evidence presented addressed his use of digital communication services to access and distribute exploitative content.

In addition to his prison sentence, Berrones must serve five years of supervised release. During that period, he will be subject to court-ordered restrictions governing his access to children and use of the internet. He will also be required to register as a sex offender.

The restitution order provides financial compensation to identified victims whose abuse was depicted in the material. Federal restitution provisions recognize that individuals depicted in child sexual abuse material can experience continuing harm when recordings of their exploitation are retained and distributed.

Berrones remains in federal custody pending transfer to a Bureau of Prisons facility. The sentencing announcement did not identify the institution where he will serve his sentence.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Ben Hostetter prosecuted the case in the Southern District of Texas.

The prosecution was brought under Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative established in May 2006 to investigate and prosecute child sexual exploitation offenses. The program coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to identify offenders, investigate online exploitation, and protect children subjected to abuse.
