GREENACRES, FLORIDA — Nine people were killed on November 1, 2026, when a Learjet 60 business aircraft plunged into a residential area of Palm Beach County during a flight from Austin, Texas, to the Bahamas. The aircraft entered an extreme descent before striking the ground near a roadway and erupting into flames, prompting a major emergency response and an investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB).
The aircraft, registered as N722BD and operated by Aurora Aviation under the name Upper Jet, had departed Austin-Bergstrom International Airport bound for North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas. The twin-engine jet was carrying seven passengers and two crew members. Flight-tracking information placed the crash at approximately 12:49 p.m. Eastern Time, after the aircraft lost altitude rapidly over South Florida.
Before the crash, the flight crew communicated with air traffic controllers about icing conditions, moderate turbulence, and precipitation while operating at approximately 35,000 feet. The pilots requested permission to climb to 37,000 feet in search of improved conditions. Shortly after receiving clearance, the crew reported an emergency involving an uncontrolled descent and excessive airspeed.
Recordings of communications with Miami air traffic control captured the crew declaring an emergency as the aircraft’s reported descent rate reached approximately 10,000 feet per minute and then 20,000 feet per minute. The crew warned controllers that the aircraft was descending toward the ground and reported a steep bank angle. Controllers attempted to maintain communication, but contact was lost before impact.
Flight-tracking data reviewed by Flightradar24 showed the jet briefly climbing before entering a steep right-hand descent. Its recorded descent rate exceeded 32,000 feet per minute, and the last altitude information received was approximately 8,750 feet. These measurements document the severity of the descent but do not establish what caused the aircraft to lose control.
Dashcam footage recorded by a passing motorist captured the final seconds of the accident. The aircraft appeared to descend almost vertically before striking the ground and producing a large explosion. The impact created a substantial crater and scattered wreckage near surrounding homes and vehicles. Authorities evacuated hundreds of nearby residents as emergency personnel secured the area.
During a November 2 briefing, federal investigators disclosed that preliminary evidence suggested portions of the aircraft may have separated before it struck the ground. Investigators are examining debris distribution, structural damage, flight conditions, and aircraft systems to determine whether an in-flight breakup occurred and what circumstances led to the loss of control. Recovery operations have been complicated by wreckage embedded in the impact crater.
The investigation will also examine the weather encountered along the aircraft’s route, including reports of icing, turbulence, and thunderstorms. Although those conditions were discussed in the crew’s final radio communications, investigators have not determined whether they contributed to the accident. The NTSB has cautioned against drawing conclusions before the available evidence is examined.
The aircraft’s unusually steep descent has also generated claims on social media that the object captured in the dashcam footage was a missile. Federal aviation records, flight-tracking data, and the crew’s radio communications identify the aircraft as a Learjet 60. No evidence released by investigators establishes that a missile was involved.
The NTSB has opened investigation ERA27MA026 and is coordinating the examination of the wreckage and operational evidence. Investigators have not established a probable cause, and the availability of the aircraft’s cockpit voice recorder remains uncertain. The investigation will continue as federal specialists document the accident site, examine the aircraft’s final flight, and evaluate the evidence recovered from the wreckage.
The Realist Juggernaut extends its deepest condolences to the families and loved ones of the nine individuals who lost their lives in this tragedy.

Yes, we have watched several YouTube videos regarding the accident and though I initially thought it looked like a missile because of the fire and impact crater, once we found a video like you have here, I could see it was indeed a Lear jet.
Thank you for sharing that, Sheila. I can certainly understand why you initially thought it resembled a missile, especially with everything going on overseas. Plus, the footage is disturbing, and seeing the aircraft more clearly helps put what happened into perspective. Hopefully, the NTSB investigation will provide the answers the families deserve. Thank you for reading and commenting, Sheila. I hope you have a great day ahead. 😎
