TEN DEFENDANTS INDICTED IN FEDERAL GOLD BAR FRAUD SCHEME TARGETING ELDERLY VICTIMS

GAINESVILLE, FLORIDA — Ten individuals from California, Florida, and Pennsylvania have been indicted on federal conspiracy charges involving an alleged gold bar fraud scheme targeting elderly victims. The indictment includes one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud and one count of conspiracy to commit money laundering, following an investigation conducted by multiple federal agencies and the Gainesville Police Department. U.S. Attorney John P. Heekin for the Northern District of Florida announced the charges on November 5, 2026.

The defendants are Gurpinder Singh, 20; Yashdeep Singh, 20; Kuljeet Singh, 22; Navjeet Singh, 25; Akashdeep Singh, 25; Harshdeep Kaur, 24; and Manpreet Singh, 26, all residents of California. Also charged are Sierra Stites, 35, and Carissa Snow, 37, both of DeLand, Florida, and Reese Lightner, 39, of Pennsylvania. All ten defendants face the same two federal conspiracy charges arising from the alleged fraudulent operation.

The indictment concerns an alleged scheme to defraud elderly individuals through conduct involving gold bars and financial transactions. Federal prosecutors have not disclosed the total amount of money involved, the number of victims, or the specific methods allegedly used to obtain their assets in the November 5 announcement. The release also does not identify how the defendants allegedly divided responsibilities within the operation or describe the transactions underlying the money laundering conspiracy.

The wire fraud and mail fraud conspiracy charge concerns an alleged agreement to carry out fraudulent activity involving interstate communications or the postal system. All ten defendants have appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Midori A. Lowry in Gainesville for their arraignments. A federal jury trial is scheduled for December 30, 2026, at 8:30 a.m. before Chief U.S. District Judge Allen C. Winsor in the Northern District of Florida. The court proceedings will determine whether prosecutors can establish the alleged conspiracies and each defendant’s criminal responsibility.

If convicted, each defendant faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison on the conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud charge, along with a separate maximum penalty of 20 years for conspiracy to commit money laundering. These penalties represent the statutory maximums for the respective charges, not predetermined sentences. Any punishment imposed following a conviction would be determined by the court under applicable federal law and sentencing guidelines.

The investigation was conducted by the FBI, Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (IRS-CI), Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), and the Gainesville Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Adam Hapner is prosecuting the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida.

Federal authorities identified the prosecution as part of the Homeland Security Task Force (HSTF) initiative, established under Executive Order 14159. The initiative brings together participating law enforcement agencies to investigate and prosecute crimes associated with criminal cartels, foreign gangs, transnational criminal organizations, and human smuggling and trafficking networks. The Justice Department has not publicly identified the ten defendants as members of a specific criminal organization in its announcement.

The prosecution raises concerns about financial schemes targeting elderly individuals, particularly those involving valuable assets and transactions that can be difficult for victims to recover. Gold bars and other precious metals may be used in fraudulent financial arrangements because of their substantial value and ability to be physically transferred.
