ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO — A 38-year-old Farmington man has been indicted on federal charges involving the alleged sexual assault and strangulation of a woman during an incident on July 13, 2023. Tillman Kyle Muneta, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, faces two counts of aggravated sexual abuse and one count of assault by strangulation, according to a November 5, 2026, announcement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
According to federal court documents, Muneta allegedly sexually assaulted a woman identified as Jane Doe through the use of force. Prosecutors further allege that he assaulted the victim by strangling and suffocating her during the incident. The indictment brings three federal charges arising from the alleged conduct, with the government required to establish the elements of each offense in court.
The two aggravated sexual abuse counts concern allegations of sexual assault involving force, while the separate strangulation charge addresses the alleged interference with the victim’s ability to breathe. Federal authorities have not publicly disclosed additional details concerning the circumstances surrounding the incident, the relationship between Muneta and the victim, or the evidence presented to the grand jury.
Muneta is currently subject to court-imposed conditions of release while awaiting trial. The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed that a trial date has not yet been scheduled. If convicted, he faces a maximum possible sentence of life imprisonment. The actual sentence, if one is imposed, would be determined by the federal court under applicable law.
The FBI Albuquerque Field Office’s Farmington Resident Agency conducted the investigation with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations. The agencies worked together to investigate the allegations and develop the case for federal prosecution.
First Assistant U.S. Attorney Ryan Ellison and FBI Albuquerque Special Agent in Charge Justin A. Garris announced the indictment. Assistant U.S. Attorney Brittany DuChaussee is prosecuting the case on behalf of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico.
The prosecution involves serious allegations of sexual violence and strangulation, with federal authorities pursuing criminal charges following the investigation. The involvement of the FBI and Navajo Nation law enforcement agencies reflects the coordination required in investigations involving tribal communities and federal jurisdiction.
An indictment is a formal criminal accusation and does not establish guilt. Muneta is presumed innocent unless and until the government proves the charges against him beyond a reasonable doubt in federal court.
