The Discovery

Category: AI Vulnerability / Autonomous Agent Exploit
Features: Zero-click compromise, prompt injection through email, exfiltration of private data, cross-platform connector abuse
Delivery Method: Malicious emails with hidden prompt instructions, agent-initiated data exfiltration to attacker-controlled servers
Threat Actor: Demonstrated by researchers (Radware) — proof of concept, but shows methodology adversaries could weaponize

OpenAI’s Deep Research agent, unveiled in February, was billed as a breakthrough: a system that lets ChatGPT autonomously browse the web, dig through Gmail or GitHub, and return detailed research reports. But with that power came new attack surfaces — and in June, cybersecurity firm Radware uncovered a flaw so dangerous it didn’t even need a click to succeed.

Researchers Gabi Nakibly, Zvika Babo, and Maor Uziel demonstrated that a simple booby-trapped email could trigger what they dubbed “ShadowLeak”. If a user asked Deep Research to “summarize today’s emails” or “find everything about Project X,” the agent would ingest the malicious message, silently execute its hidden instructions, and exfiltrate sensitive data to an attacker-controlled server.

Victims didn’t have to read, open, or click the email. The exfiltration happened entirely behind the scenes, through OpenAI’s own cloud servers.

“This is the quintessential zero-click attack,” said David Aviv, CTO at Radware. “There is no user action required, no visible cue, and no way for victims to know their data has been compromised.”

The Mechanics of ShadowLeak

The proof-of-concept exploit relied on prompt injection camouflaged inside the email body:

  • Invisible Instructions: Tiny fonts, white-on-white text, or layout tricks invisible to human eyes.
  • Deceptive Framing: Attackers disguised their servers as “compliance validation systems” to convince the agent that sending data was legitimate.
  • Safety Overrides: The prompt insisted the requested PII was “public” — bypassing safety rules.

In Radware’s demo, a benign-looking email titled “Restructuring Package – Action Items” carried hidden text that ordered Deep Research to extract the employee’s name and address from Gmail and forward it to a fake lookup service.

Because the activity looked like normal assistant traffic, network defenders would see nothing unusual. The researchers emphasized that no network-level indicators betrayed the compromise — making ShadowLeak “nearly impossible to detect” for business users.

Beyond Gmail: A Wider Threat

While Gmail integration was the test case, the same exploit path applies to any connector feeding structured or semi-structured data into Deep Research:

  • Google Drive (contracts, HR docs, strategy papers)
  • Dropbox (customer records, product roadmaps)
  • SharePoint (meeting notes, internal reports)
  • GitHub (source code, API keys)

The concern is systemic: any autonomous agent empowered to process external data sources can be manipulated to bypass guardrails and weaponize its connectors against the user.

The Response

  • June 18: Radware disclosed the bug via BugCrowd.
  • Early August: OpenAI confirmed it had implemented a fix.
  • September 3: Vulnerability formally marked resolved.

OpenAI acknowledged the flaw, noting:

“It’s very important to us that we develop our models safely. We take steps to reduce the risk of malicious use, and we’re continually improving safeguards to make our models more robust against exploits like prompt injections.”

Radware said there was no evidence of ShadowLeak being exploited in the wild — but warned the concept represents a new class of AI-agent vulnerabilities.

The Larger Pattern

ShadowLeak is part of a growing trend: AI exploitation is shifting from unsafe outputs to unsafe actions.

  • Earlier abuses focused on tricking models into writing malware or phishing kits.
  • Now, adversaries target autonomous tools linked to personal or corporate data.
  • The result is an attack vector that looks indistinguishable from “approved” assistant behavior — blurring the line between user action and model action.

The industry is entering an era where “guardrails” for safe outputs aren’t enough. What matters are the behind-the-scenes actions agents take once granted system-level or connector privileges.

Forecast — Next 30 Days

  • Industry Fallout: Expect enterprises to demand stronger safeguards before adopting agent connectors at scale.
  • New Research: Other security firms will likely demonstrate copycat exploits against competing autonomous agents (Anthropic, Google, Microsoft).
  • Policy Pressure: Regulators may push for AI agent safety standards, especially where email, cloud storage, or healthcare data are involved.
  • Exploitation Risk: Criminal groups may attempt weaponization of ShadowLeak-style prompt injections within phishing campaigns.
  • Detection Tools: Growing demand for agent-side monitoring that logs every outbound connection, not just final outputs.

TRJ Verdict

ShadowLeak should serve as a wake-up call: zero-click AI compromises are no longer hypothetical.

The promise of autonomous AI agents is powerful, but the risk is existential when the same tools are granted access to email inboxes, file drives, or corporate codebases. A single hidden prompt in an unseen email can flip these systems from assistants into covert exfiltration engines.

OpenAI patched this instance, but the bigger story is clear — autonomous AI must be treated as a new class of attack surface. If industry and government fail to set hard standards now, the next ShadowLeak won’t just be a proof of concept. It will be an active breach, measured in stolen contracts, compromised identities, and fractured trust in AI itself.
