- Deepfake videos of fake “tax advisors” are spreading through email links and messaging apps.
- AI-written emails and PDFs now mimic IRS notices with tone-perfect formatting and logos.

This year’s tax scams don’t stop with voice.
They hit you through every digital door:
- Emails with subject lines like “IRS Flagged Issues” or “Audit Notice”
- Attachments posing as official IRS PDFs
- QR codes that redirect to malware
- Fake websites mimicking H&R Block, TurboTax, and IRS.gov
Microsoft reported over 2,300 organizations targeted between Feb 12–28 alone — primarily in the engineering, IT, and consulting sectors.

According to Zimperium’s Kern Smith, there’s a surge in mobile-first attacks this year:
- Texts that look like IRS alerts
- Fake tax refund apps that keylog your credentials
- Typosquatting domains like
irs-taxsupport.comortrumprefund.gov
These attacks bypass spam filters and prey on urgency.“We’re seeing attackers move into mobile channels where users feel less guarded,” Smith said. “And they’re winning.”
