THE BREACH THEY WON’T TALK ABOUT
In June 2023, the Qilin ransomware gang launched a crippling cyberattack on Synnovis, a major pathology services provider supporting some of London’s largest National Health Service (NHS) hospitals. What followed was not just a digital catastrophe—it was a medical emergency.
The attack knocked out diagnostic systems, delayed test results, caused blood shortages, and forced hospitals into contingency protocols for critical care. Yet, nearly a full year later, the most affected group—the patients themselves—are still waiting to be told what was stolen.
This includes data connected to sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cancer screenings, and other intimate health conditions. According to breach analysts at CaseMatrix, more than 900,000 individuals may have had sensitive medical data exposed.
And most of them still don’t know.
DATA THAT NEVER STAYED PRIVATE
Initial details released by Synnovis were vague. Their breach response page confirmed that “some patient information was compromised,” and referenced test codes, NHS numbers, and partial personal data—while emphasizing that analysis was “ongoing.”
But CaseMatrix’s independent review of Qilin’s published leak revealed something far more serious:
- Names, dates of birth, contact details, and NHS identifiers
- Pathology and histology forms sent between departments—often containing explicit medical symptoms, diagnoses, and test types for cancer and STIs
These aren’t abstract breaches. These are real people having deeply personal medical information uploaded to darknet forums—with no formal notification from the entity responsible for safeguarding that information.
THE IMMEDIATE IMPACT: A NATIONAL BLOOD SHORTAGE
While data analysis lagged, the NHS bled—literally. In the wake of the attack, Synnovis’s core diagnostic and blood matching services were offline, leaving hospitals scrambling. Doctors were forced to use universal donor blood, bypassing normal cross-matching protocols due to unavailable lab results.
At one point, blood transfusions were rationed, with hospitals limiting procedures to only the most life-threatening cases. The breach, in real terms, jeopardized lives and crippled critical services in one of the world’s most advanced public health systems.
Three months later, Synnovis announced most systems had been restored. But even then, no breach notifications had been sent to the people whose data was exposed.
A YEAR OF SILENCE
Now, 11 months later, Synnovis claims the “eDiscovery process” it launched to assess stolen data is “significantly advanced” and nearing completion. But those waiting for answers—patients, clinicians, and NHS partners alike—remain uninformed.
“We will notify any relevant organisations directly should this process determine that data associated with their organisation was impacted,” Synnovis said last year. This week, the company restated that updates were coming “as appropriate.”
NHS Trusts like Guy’s and St. Thomas’ and King’s College Hospital—major Synnovis clients—report they’ve received no detailed disclosures. NHS England has deferred all responsibility back to Synnovis, while the UK’s Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) reminds that while breach analysis can take time, there is a legal obligation to inform affected individuals once sensitive data exposure is confirmed.
THE LEGAL FRAMEWORK BEING IGNORED
According to the ICO’s own guidelines:
“There is likely to be a significant impact on affected individuals because of the sensitivity of the data… This is likely to result in a high risk to their rights and freedoms, so they would need to be informed about the breach.”
This isn’t a policy suggestion. It’s a compliance requirement under the UK’s Data Protection Act and GDPR. The legal threshold has clearly been crossed, especially with pathology forms linked to sexually transmitted diseases and cancer diagnoses.
Yet no formal notices have been delivered. No letters. No calls. No warnings. Just silence—wrapped in corporate process language and buried under bureaucracy.
