HARRODS NOW IN THE CROSSHAIRS
Harrods, London’s iconic luxury department store, has publicly confirmed it was the target of an unauthorized cyber access attempt—making it the third major British retailer in a week to disclose suspicious activity on its IT systems.
In a brief but urgent statement released Thursday, Harrods stated:
“We recently experienced attempts to gain unauthorised access to some of our systems. Our IT security team immediately took proactive steps to keep systems safe.”
As part of its immediate response, Harrods restricted internet access across its physical sites, although both in-person and online shopping services remain operational, according to the company.
A PATTERN EMERGING
The Harrods alert follows nearly identical disclosures from two other retail giants:
- The Co-op confirmed on Wednesday that it had proactively shut down part of its IT systems. While internal operations such as employee clock-in systems were affected, customer-facing services remained stable.
- Marks & Spencer (M&S), however, appears to have suffered a more severe disruption, with its entire online shopping platform offline, supply chain breakdowns, and reports of empty shelves in stores. Employees were told not to report to its main warehouse distribution center, suggesting deeper operational impact—potentially consistent with ransomware deployment.
Though no public attribution has been confirmed, parliamentary officials and private sources suggest that at least one of the incidents—possibly M&S—involved ransomware-style tactics.
GOVERNMENT RESPONSE AND GROWING CONCERNS
Richard Horne, head of the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), addressed the wave of incidents:
“The disruption caused by the recent incidents impacting the retail sector are naturally a cause for concern to those businesses affected, their customers and the public.”
He added that the NCSC is actively working with affected organizations to assess the threat scope and provide sector-wide intelligence updates.
Meanwhile, Matt Western, chair of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, didn’t hold back:
“These serious attacks threaten not just the bottom line of the businesses involved but also the wider food supply chain. If shelves are left empty and deliveries unfulfilled, local communities will suffer.”
Western further criticized what he described as the government’s slow response to ransomware’s rise, warning:
“Ransomware is a real and growing threat to many aspects of our daily lives. Cybersecurity affects us all, and we must do more to prevent these attacks knocking out whole sectors of our economy in future.”
ICO INVESTIGATIONS UNDERWAY
The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), responsible for ensuring compliance with U.K. data protection laws, confirmed it had received breach reports from Marks & Spencer and the Co-op and is now coordinating with the NCSC to determine whether any customer or employee data was compromised.
Stephen Bonner, Deputy Commissioner at the ICO, stated:
“We can confirm we have received reports from Marks and Spencer plc and the Co-op Group. We are making enquiries with these organisations and working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre.”
At this stage, Harrods has not reported any confirmed data exposure—but if ransomware or exfiltration-based threats were indeed involved, disclosures could follow in the coming weeks.

These attacks underscore an evolving doctrine of cyber conflict: disruption without destruction, infiltration without overt damage.
Retailers sit at the intersection of:
- Financial transaction systems
- Customer databases
- Supply chains
- Logistics frameworks
- Physical and online infrastructure
This makes them ideal targets for cybercriminals and nation-state proxies alike—whether for financial gain, espionage, or broader destabilization.
And as we’ve seen with M&S’s warehouse disruption and online blackout, the line between a “minor breach” and supply chain chaos can be razor-thin.
The U.K.’s retail sector, much like its healthcare and transportation counterparts, is beginning to feel the pinch of persistent threat operations probing for soft entry points and economic leverage.
