In a plot twist straight out of a digital heist comedy, the hacker behind the jaw-dropping $42 million theft from decentralized crypto exchange GMX has voluntarily returned nearly all of the stolen funds — after pocketing a $5 million bounty for their “honesty.”
Yes, you read that right.
After exploiting a vulnerability that drained GMX users dry, the hacker was rewarded for their efforts in what might be the most surreal “gentleman’s agreement” in crypto history.
The Heist: $42 Million Vanishes, Then Reappears
The saga began Wednesday, when blockchain analysts spotted suspicious movements on the Ethereum network involving 10,000 ETH (about $30 million) and over $10.5 million in FRAX stablecoins. GMX soon confirmed it had been “exploited.”
By Thursday, instead of lawyering up or going silent, GMX made an unorthodox public appeal directly to the hacker—via an on-chain message for all the world to see.
“You’ve successfully executed the exploit; your abilities in doing so are evident to anyone looking into the exploit transactions,” GMX stated with remarkable calm.
Then came the pitch—equal parts negotiation and veiled threat:
“It’s likely already clear to you that the decision between accepting this bounty and keeping the exploited funds is the difference between being able to spend the funds freely versus taking additional risks to access them.”
Translation: Take the $5 million, give back the rest, or live forever on the run with money you’ll struggle to launder.
The hacker’s reply?
An on-chain message reading simply:
“ok, funds will be returned later.”
By Friday, it was done. The hacker returned nearly $40.5 million in full view of blockchain analysts, and kept their $5 million “bounty”—a digital pat on the back for a heist well-played.
The Aftermath: Bug Patched, Crypto Circus Rolls On
GMX later published a post-mortem detailing the technical vulnerability behind the theft. The exploit, now patched, allowed the attacker to manipulate certain liquidity functions and drain funds.
“Our treasury reserves will cover user losses,” GMX reassured customers, calling the event a “learning experience.”
GMX—which launched in 2021 and now boasts 714,000 users and $305 billion in total trading volume—has resumed normal operations, as if returning tens of millions after a ransom is just another Friday in crypto land.
Why This Deal Isn’t as Safe as It Seems
Despite the deal, legal experts warn that the hacker’s troubles may not be over.
The U.S. government has shown increasing willingness to prosecute hackers even when they return funds—especially if prosecutors smell market manipulation or broader criminal activity.
Case in point: Avraham Eisenberg, the infamous hacker behind the $110 million Mango Markets exploit.
Eisenberg returned $67 million after negotiating a similar “settlement” with Mango, believing it would shield him from law enforcement.
It didn’t.
Federal prosecutors still pursued him, charging Eisenberg with market manipulation, wire fraud, and commodities fraud. He was later convicted and sentenced to 52 months in prison—though ironically, not for the Mango hack itself, but for unrelated child exploitation offenses uncovered during the investigation.
Bottom line: even if you return the loot, you may still lose your freedom if your name ever leaks.
