As lead analyst, Chowles was responsible for decrypting data on seized devices and facilitating the confiscation of crypto assets. Among these were 97 bitcoin, obtained from White’s personal “retirement wallet.”
White, convicted and in custody, later claimed that 50 of those bitcoin mysteriously vanished in 2017, worth only £60,000 (~$80,000) at the time — but now equivalent to £4.4 million (~$5.9 million) in 2025.

- An iPhone linking Chowles to crypto transfer activity
- Browser history showing engagement with crypto mixing services
- Handwritten notebooks in his office containing logins, wallet addresses, and transactional notes tied to White’s accounts

Merseyside Police’s Detective Chief Inspector John Black condemned the betrayal:
“This case should illustrate in the starkest terms that nobody is above the law. Chowles involved himself in the very criminality he was sworn to investigate and prevent.”

“We understand and fully share the concern this case will cause the public we serve. Chowles was dismissed for gross misconduct and his actions do not reflect the integrity of our agency.”
