Proton’s new Emergency Access feature addresses this problem by allowing account holders to designate up to five trusted contacts who can request entry to their accounts during emergencies.

How It Works

Emergency Access is structured to balance privacy with practicality:

• Trusted Contacts: Up to five people can be assigned. Each must also have a Proton account.
• Wait Times: The account holder sets a waiting period, anywhere from a few days to several months. If a request is made, the account holder has the ability to approve or deny immediately.
• Automatic Approval: If the account holder doesn’t respond within the designated wait time, the system will grant access automatically.
• Scope of Access: Emergency contacts can access Proton Mail, Proton Pass, Proton Drive, and Proton VPN data, depending on what the original account holder used.
• Revocation: Access can be removed or modified at any time, and wait times can be adjusted.

The feature is available only for paid Proton plans (Unlimited, Family, Business Suite).

• Medical Emergencies: Loved ones accessing insurance records, prescriptions, or legal files when the account holder is hospitalized.

Setting It Up

For Proton users, setup runs through the Recovery tab inside account settings:

1. Log in and select Recovery.
2. Click “Add emergency contact.”
3. Enter the Proton email address of your trusted contact.
4. Choose a wait time for access (days → months).
5. Re-enter your password to confirm.

From there, all emergency contacts are listed in the Recovery tab, where they can be modified, revoked, or updated at any time. Contacts receive an email notification when they’ve been assigned and can later use the Recovery tab to request access.
