On the evening of January 5, 2021, an unidentified individual moved through the streets of Capitol Hill carrying a backpack and intent known only to them. Surveillance cameras tracked fragments of the walk — a gray hooded sweatshirt, black gloves, face mask, and a pair of black-and-gray Nike Air Max Speed Turf shoes marked with a yellow logo. Between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., the figure navigated First Street, North Carolina Avenue SE, and New Jersey Avenue before turning onto D Street. The movements were steady, deliberate, almost rehearsed.
At 7:54 p.m., the suspect sat on a bench outside the Democratic National Committee headquarters, appearing to check the area before leaving behind a backpack later confirmed to contain a viable pipe bomb. Roughly twenty minutes later, the same person entered an alley behind the Republican National Committee building and placed a second device near the Capitol Hill Club. At 8:18 p.m., the final camera frame showed the suspect walking east on Rumsey Court, disappearing into the dark grid of the city.
The next afternoon, both bombs were discovered and rendered safe by federal authorities. Investigators determined that the devices were functional and capable of inflicting severe damage had they detonated. In the years since, the FBI has reviewed tens of thousands of hours of footage, interviewed more than a thousand witnesses, and followed hundreds of leads. Yet the person responsible remains unidentified — a specter who walked through one of the most surveilled districts in the nation and vanished without trace.
The Bureau’s most recent update includes higher-quality footage and extended clips of the suspect’s route, hoping that new eyes might notice what algorithms and analysts have missed. The reward for information stands at $500,000, one of the largest for a single domestic case still unresolved. The footage shows calm precision: the suspect pauses, adjusts glasses, scans the street, then proceeds as if guided by a practiced map. No urgency. No panic. Just controlled movement through a city built on observation.
What unsettles investigators is not the complexity of the devices — they were crude but real — it’s the efficiency of the disappearance. Every visible trail ends at the edge of a camera’s field. No recovered DNA. No traceable purchase of the rare shoes. No vehicle reliably linked to the movements that night. It’s as though the operation was designed around the blind spots of the surveillance grid itself.
For Washington, the case has become a symbol of the limits of visibility. The capital can document nearly everything — traffic lights, street crossings, even the flicker of motion sensors — but not motive, and not the human face hidden beneath ordinary fabric. Four years later, the footage still plays on loop in Bureau labs, analysts freezing each frame, magnifying pixels, chasing a ghost that knew exactly where the line between light and shadow ran.
Some within law enforcement quietly call it “the perfect walk.” A person carrying two live explosives navigated the core of American political infrastructure, left them at opposing party headquarters, and escaped unseen. Whether the goal was harm, distraction, or symbolism, the message landed: even under constant watch, a single individual can still slip through the seams.
The FBI’s appeal remains open. Tip lines stay active. Every anniversary renews the question that defines the case — not just who placed the bombs, but how someone could move so freely through the center of power and leave behind silence that still reverberates through the city.
Until that answer comes, the investigation stands as both evidence and warning: oversight without closure is illusion.
The suspect remains at large.

I remember when this happened and thought surely by now, they’d have figured out who the culprit was. You and Chris covered the other comments I was going to make. Great article, and sorry I haven’t been reading or commenting lately. Been heads down working on my 5th book. I’ve got your site bookmarked as one of my favorites though, so you’ll see a bit more of me, John. Also, are you still podcasting? I caught one recently from 2024. And I searched for any updates on your site about “3I/Atlas” and didn’t find any. Perhaps that’s not something you’ve been covering though. Thought I’d ask.
Thank you so much, Sheila — it’s good to hear from you again. And no worries at all about being busy. When you’re deep into writing a book, everything else goes quiet around you, so I completely understand. Congratulations on pushing forward with your fifth one — that’s something to be proud of.
I’m glad you remembered the Capitol Hill situation. Same here — I always expected that with the level of surveillance in that building, someone would’ve been held accountable by now. The fact that we’re still looking at a blank wall tells you everything you need to know about what wasn’t meant to be revealed.
And I appreciate you keeping the site bookmarked. That means a lot.
As for the podcast — yes, I’ll be returning. I’m not sure of the exact date yet, but I’m restructuring things to make it better. It’s definitely coming back.
And regarding “3I/Atlas,” you’re correct — it’s not something I’ve been covering recently. Not because it isn’t interesting, but because I’ve been focused on other investigations and other things that have been going on. But if it resurfaces in a significant way, or connects with one of the active threads we’re tracking, I’ll absolutely dig into it.
Thank you again, Sheila. I appreciate the support, and I hope all is well. God bless you and yours. 🙏😎
I didn’t remember this and asked my wife the other day if she remembered it. I had seen some of the footage in a You Tube video that came across my feed. I asked her if the bombs ever went off and she remembered that they had not. After seeing the video, I was a bit surprised that this person hasn’t been caught, but like you said the route seemed very deliberate as if the suspect knew where he/she could be seen and not seen. Showing up out of nowhere and disappearing into nowhere is quite a trick these days with all the cameras scattered around. It is a mystery that I hope gets solved someday soon.
Thanks for the post, John.
You’re welcome, Chris — and thank you. You remembered correctly; the devices never detonated. It’s one of those cases that slips people’s minds because so much else happened around that time, but the details are remarkable. The suspect’s path through the surveillance grid shows precision — moving through visibility gaps most people don’t even realize can exist. You’re right, it’s rare for someone to vanish that completely in an area so saturated with cameras. I agree — it’s a mystery that deserves closure, and hopefully, one day soon, we’ll have it. Thanks again, Chris — I appreciate you taking the time to read and share your thoughts. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your reply. It is a very strange case particularly that both political parties were targeted.
Thank you for your Kind words. I hope you have a great day!
