Hungarian and Romanian authorities have arrested four young individuals in connection with a series of coordinated swatting incidents that triggered repeated emergency responses across Hungary, officials confirmed this week.
According to Hungarian police, the suspects include a 17-year-old Romanian national and three Hungarian citizens aged 16, 18, and 20. Law enforcement carried out coordinated raids earlier this month, seizing computers, mobile phones, and other digital devices as part of a joint cross-border investigation. The seized materials are now under forensic review to determine the full scope of the operation and each suspect’s level of involvement.
The investigation began in mid-July after police agencies across Hungary received a surge of alarming reports, including bomb threats targeting schools, religious institutions, residential buildings, and police units. Authorities also received warnings claiming imminent attacks and threats to kill named individuals. Each report prompted full emergency deployments before being determined to be false.
Officials said the incidents were part of organized swatting and doxing campaigns — tactics that involve making fraudulent reports of serious crimes while misusing personal data to intimidate or harass victims. Investigators determined that the suspects initially contacted victims through online platforms, obtained phone numbers and personal details, and then used that information to place false emergency calls impersonating the victims themselves.
Hungarian police stated that the 16-year-old suspect was questioned on suspicion of threatening the public but denied the allegations and was released pending further proceedings. The 17-year-old Romanian suspect faces charges including terrorist acts, threats endangering the public, multiple counts of false reporting, and misuse of personal data. The legal status of the two older Hungarian suspects remains under review as authorities continue analyzing digital evidence to clarify their roles.
The arrests follow earlier disruptions caused by similar threats. In January 2025, bomb threat emails were sent to more than 200 schools and educational institutions across Hungary, prompting temporary closures nationwide. No explosives were found, and authorities at the time noted that the messages shared consistent language, suggesting a coordinated source. Officials have not yet confirmed whether those incidents are directly linked to the suspects arrested this month.
In a separate but related announcement, Romanian authorities revealed that they are investigating an online marketplace allegedly designed to facilitate contract killings while obscuring user identities and financial transactions. Two Romanian nationals are currently under investigation in connection with that platform. Authorities have not disclosed whether the two cases overlap, but both investigations highlight the growing role of online coordination in real-world criminal threats.

I can only imagine the work and concern these teenagers caused. And for what? Look Dad and Mom, I was on the news tonight.
Young people do dumb things sometimes but swatting and bomb threats are no joke. I was substitute teaching in a school one day when the school got a bomb threat. It disrupted the rest of the day. Students had to be moved around while bomb sniffing dogs and officers searched the premises. It turned out to be a hoax but at quite a cost. So many people lost a day of productivity. I hope those responsible for these events are held accountable to the point that they won’t think of doing something like this again.
Thank you for this article.
You’re welcome, Chris — that perspective carries real weight, especially given your firsthand experience. You’re right that these incidents aren’t abstract or harmless. Even when they turn out to be hoaxes, the disruption, fear, and cost are very real for everyone involved.
Swatting isn’t a prank; it’s the misuse of emergency systems in a way that diverts resources and puts people at risk. Accountability matters here not as punishment for its own sake, but as a clear signal that this kind of behavior has consequences beyond momentary attention. There was a very serious situation where someone had my sister’s house swatted. They told police they were at my sister’s house and witnessed my sister and her boyfriend shoot someone and throw the body in the basement. SWAT and additional units were sent around 12:30 a.m.
My sister was extremely upset and scared and had no idea what was going on. Police searched her house and, of course, found nothing at all. But the situation itself was alarming. The police said the call came from Pennsylvania, and she has not heard anything about it since. It sounds to me like whoever did it may get away with it.
This is something that can happen to any one of us without notice. It is very serious, and there needs to be a better way to screen these 911 calls.
Thanks again, Chris. I appreciate you sharing your experience as well and taking the time to engage with the article. It’s always greatly appreciated. I hope you have a great night. 😎
What they did to you sister illustrates just how something like this can affect people. How could it not? Having SWAT at your house in the middle of the night looking for a corpse? Her reaction was normal, of course, and if they do ever catch who did this, the perpetrators should feel as scared as your sister did when they hear their sentence.
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for your kind words. I wish you a good day! 🙂
