CHEEKTOWAGA MAN PLEADS GUILTY IN FEDERAL CHILD EXPLOITATION CASE: COURT RECORDS DETAIL MULTI-YEAR ABUSE, DIGITAL EVIDENCE, AND DEVICE EXTRACTION FINDINGS

A Cheektowaga, New York resident has entered a guilty plea in federal court to charges involving the production and possession of child sexual abuse material following an investigation that identified sustained abuse and the creation of illicit images.

Dustin Coffelt, 36, of Cheektowaga, New York, pleaded guilty before U.S. District Judge Lawrence J. Vilardo to two counts of production of child sexual abuse material and one count of possession of child sexual abuse material. The charges carry a mandatory minimum sentence of 15 years in federal prison, a maximum of 30 years, and a potential fine of up to $250,000. Sentencing has been scheduled for August 24, 2026.

The investigation began in July 2022 when the Depew Police Department received a report alleging sexual abuse involving a 13-year-old minor victim. Investigative findings determined that the abuse extended over a period of time and included communication across multiple digital platforms, including social media applications and text messaging services.

On July 29, 2022, Coffelt provided a voluntary statement to detectives from the Depew and Cheektowaga Police Departments, during which he admitted to engaging in sexual abuse of the minor and to producing explicit images of the victim. Coffelt also voluntarily surrendered his cellular device to investigators. A forensic extraction of the device revealed numerous sexually explicit images of the minor victim, forming the evidentiary basis for the federal charges.

Following the initial investigation, Coffelt was taken into custody on August 11, 2022, by agents of the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Maeve E. Huggins and Sasha Mascarenhas under the jurisdiction of the Western District of New York.

The investigation involved coordinated efforts between the Depew Police Department, the Cheektowaga Police Department, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The multi-agency response reflects standard investigative procedures in cases involving exploitation of minors, including victim interviews, digital communication tracing, and forensic analysis of electronic devices.

Cases involving production charges typically rely on direct evidence recovered from devices, corroborated by admissions, communication records, and image metadata. The presence of self-produced material and device-based storage significantly strengthens prosecutorial evidence under federal statutes governing exploitation offenses.

The guilty plea establishes formal admission of the charged conduct. Sentencing will be determined by the federal court based on statutory requirements and applicable sentencing guidelines.
