CLARKSBURG, W.Va. — The Federal Bureau of Investigation has released its latest national law enforcement safety and staffing data through the FBI Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) Program, providing updated statistics on officers killed, assaulted, injured, and employed across the United States during 2025.
The newly released publication, titled Officers Killed and Assaulted in the Line of Duty, 2025, was published Monday through the FBI’s Crime Data Explorer (CDE) platform alongside updated Law Enforcement Employee Counts collected from participating agencies nationwide.
The report presents preliminary national data regarding line-of-duty deaths and assaults involving law enforcement officers during 2025 while also examining long-term trends spanning from 2016 through 2025. The information is based on data voluntarily submitted to the FBI’s UCR Program by law enforcement agencies throughout the country.
According to the FBI, 53 law enforcement officers were feloniously killed in the line of duty during 2025. Federal analysts noted that the number represents a decline compared to the previous two years, though broader violence directed at officers continues to remain a major operational concern across multiple jurisdictions.
The report identified firearms as the most frequently used weapon in fatal attacks against officers.
Federal crime data also revealed that 49 offenders were identified in connection with the 2025 felonious killings of officers. Of those offenders:
- 95.7 percent were male
- 64.4 percent were identified as white
- 29 offenders were reported to have prior criminal records
The FBI’s regional analysis showed that the Southern United States continued to report the highest number of officer line-of-duty deaths for the tenth consecutive year. Despite remaining the highest region overall, the South experienced a notable reduction in fatalities during 2025, dropping from 28 officer deaths in 2024 to 21 deaths in 2025 — a decrease of approximately 25 percent.
While officer fatalities declined in several areas, assault data moved in the opposite direction.
Law enforcement agencies reported 90,178 officer assaults during 2025, producing a national assault rate of 13.8 assaults per 100 officers. According to the FBI, this represents the highest officer assault rate recorded during the past decade.
The increase reflects growing operational pressures facing patrol officers, deputies, federal agents, and specialized enforcement units responding to violent incidents, domestic disturbances, narcotics operations, gang activity, armed confrontations, and high-risk arrest situations across the country.
The FBI also documented continued firearm-related injuries involving officers. After reaching a 10-year peak in 2023, the number of officers assaulted and injured by firearms declined over the following two years:
- 517 officers injured by firearms in 2023
- 470 officers injured by firearms in 2024
- 445 officers injured by firearms in 2025
Federal analysts additionally identified motor vehicle accidents as the leading cause of accidental officer deaths between 2021 and 2025. The finding reinforces ongoing concerns surrounding high-speed emergency response operations, roadway exposure risks, patrol fatigue, weather hazards, and vehicular pursuit conditions encountered during law enforcement activity.
Alongside the officer safety report, the FBI also released updated information from the 2025 Law Enforcement Employee Counts Data Collection. The dataset includes annual staffing submissions from law enforcement agencies nationwide and documents the total number of full-time sworn officers and civilian personnel employed throughout participating jurisdictions.
The FBI stated that the employee count information is used by local, county, state, tribal, and federal agencies to assess staffing demands, operational readiness requirements, resource allocation planning, and long-term public safety infrastructure needs.
The release arrives during a period where many agencies across the United States continue confronting recruitment shortages, retention concerns, increased overtime demands, evolving cybercrime responsibilities, officer wellness challenges, and rising calls for specialized investigative capabilities tied to digital threats, organized crime, narcotics trafficking, child exploitation investigations, and infrastructure security operations.
The FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program remains one of the largest centralized law enforcement statistical collection systems in the country and serves as a major national reference point for crime analysis, operational planning, public safety policy evaluation, and long-term enforcement trend assessment.
