WASHINGTON, D.C. — The FBI Washington Field Office has announced a $200,000 reward for information leading to the apprehension and prosecution of MONICA WITT, a former United States Air Force intelligence specialist and counterintelligence agent accused of defecting to Iran and providing classified national defense information to the Iranian government.
Federal authorities stated WITT remains a fugitive following a federal espionage indictment returned by a grand jury in the District of Columbia in February 2019.
According to the FBI, WITT served as an active-duty member of the United States Air Force between 1997 and 2008 before later working as a government contractor until 2010. During her military and contracting service, federal authorities stated she held access to SECRET and TOP SECRET information involving U.S. intelligence and counterintelligence operations.
Investigators stated WITT’s access allegedly included highly sensitive information related to intelligence collection programs, operational procedures, foreign intelligence matters, and the identities of undercover U.S. Intelligence Community personnel.
Federal prosecutors allege WITT defected to Iran in 2013 before later assisting the Iranian government by transmitting classified and sensitive information tied to U.S. national defense operations and intelligence personnel.
According to the indictment, WITT allegedly provided information that endangered U.S. personnel and their families stationed overseas while also assisting Iranian intelligence operations targeting former colleagues and members of the American intelligence community.
Federal authorities further allege WITT conducted research and operational support activity on behalf of the Iranian regime designed to help identify, monitor, and target former U.S. intelligence and defense personnel.
The FBI stated WITT’s alleged actions benefitted elements associated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, commonly referred to as the IRGC. Federal authorities describe portions of the IRGC as heavily involved in intelligence operations, unconventional warfare activity, proxy force coordination, cyber operations, and support for organizations designated by the United States as terrorist entities.
The case remains one of the more significant publicly known U.S. counterintelligence investigations involving alleged insider compromise tied to Iran and highlights continuing concerns surrounding insider threats, defections, intelligence targeting, and exploitation of former military and intelligence personnel by foreign adversaries.
Federal counterintelligence officials have repeatedly warned that foreign intelligence services increasingly target former government employees, contractors, military personnel, and individuals with prior security clearances in order to gain access to classified operational knowledge, intelligence methodologies, and sensitive government systems.
Investigators have also noted that hostile foreign intelligence operations increasingly combine traditional espionage tactics with cyber operations, psychological targeting, ideological recruitment efforts, online influence activity, and exploitation of personal or professional vulnerabilities.
According to federal authorities, WITT remains at large and the FBI continues active efforts to locate and apprehend her.
FBI Washington Field Office Counterintelligence and Cyber Division Special Agent in Charge DANIEL WIERZBICKI stated investigators believe individuals may possess information regarding WITT’s current whereabouts or activities and urged the public to provide information to federal authorities.
The FBI stated individuals with relevant information can contact the bureau through the FBI tip line, local FBI field offices, American embassies or consulates, or official federal reporting systems.
Federal authorities emphasized that the charges against WITT remain allegations contained in a federal indictment. The investigation remains ongoing as the FBI continues efforts to bring her into U.S. custody.

It definitely is a remarkable case, especially considering how long she has remained outside U.S. custody while still being tied to one of the more publicly known counterintelligence investigations involving a former intelligence specialist.
Cases involving alleged defections and insider compromise also tend to remain highly relevant for years because investigators continue examining potential operational damage, intelligence exposure, foreign targeting methods, and long-term counterintelligence risks tied to the original breach.

I looked this person up and she was born in El Paso, Texas in 1979 and converted to Islam in 2012 in Iran. I’m a little surprised they didn’t keep a better eye on her as she had several personal issues which could lead to a situation like this. Nevertheless, what she did was wrong and the reward shows how serious we are about this type of thing. I can’t imagine trading most places in the US for anywhere in Iran. Now that the recent conflict with Iran has materialized, it makes this story even more timely.

One of the difficult realities in counterintelligence work is that investigators often only fully recognize the scope of a potential insider threat after significant warning signs, behavioral shifts, or foreign contacts become clearer in hindsight. Cases involving former intelligence or military personnel can become especially complicated because individuals may already possess extensive operational knowledge, prior clearances, and familiarity with investigative procedures.
You also bring up an important point regarding timing. Stories involving espionage, foreign intelligence operations, and insider compromise tend to draw much greater public attention whenever geopolitical tensions escalate internationally, especially involving countries already tied to longstanding counterintelligence concerns.

I agree, it is unreal. Cases like this are definitely difficult for many people to understand, including myself, especially involving someone who previously held positions tied to national security and counterintelligence responsibilities.
From the public side, investigators and prosecutors often examine a combination of ideological influence, personal grievances, psychological factors, financial motivations, coercion risks, or geopolitical alignment shifts when trying to understand why individuals allegedly defect or provide assistance to foreign governments. What makes cases like this especially frustrating is that in many counterintelligence investigations, the full picture does not always become publicly known unfortunately.
