SAN DIEGO — Federal authorities continue investigating the deadly shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego after three adults were killed during what officials described as a violent and rapidly unfolding incident that has shaken communities throughout the region.
FBI San Diego Special Agent in Charge Mark Remily stated during a public briefing that two teenage subjects believed responsible for the shooting are also deceased.
“As was reported earlier, three adults lost their lives in today’s senseless act of violence,” Remily stated.
Federal investigators have not yet publicly released additional details regarding motive, timeline reconstruction, weapon recovery findings, or the relationship between the deceased subjects and victims as investigators continue processing evidence and conducting interviews.
The FBI stated the investigation remains active and involves extensive coordination with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
Authorities confirmed FBI victim specialists were deployed to the reunification center located at 4125 Hathaway Street in San Diego to assist families and individuals impacted by the shooting. Additional victim services personnel are also being deployed from FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., as support operations continue expanding.
Investigators stated FBI bomb technicians completed security sweeps and cleared vehicles associated with the teenage subjects involved in the incident.
Federal evidence response teams continue processing the crime scene while investigators conduct interviews involving family members, associates, and potential witnesses connected to the case.
Remily stated investigators are working methodically to preserve and analyze all available evidence tied to the shooting.
“We are in the process of interviewing family and friends of the subjects, and evidence response teams are gathering all the evidence from the scene for review,” Remily stated.
The FBI has not publicly indicated whether investigators currently believe the attack was ideologically motivated, targeted toward a religious institution specifically, connected to personal grievances, or influenced by online radicalization or extremist material.
Investigators frequently examine digital communications, social media activity, online behavioral indicators, electronic devices, travel history, manifesto material, and interpersonal relationships during major violent crime investigations involving religious institutions or public gathering locations.
Law enforcement agencies also continue evaluating whether additional threats, accomplices, communications, or planning activity may have existed prior to the attack.
The Islamic Center of San Diego remains one of the region’s largest Islamic community institutions, serving worshippers, educational programs, community outreach operations, and religious gatherings throughout the San Diego area.
Violent incidents targeting houses of worship continue drawing heightened federal scrutiny due to the broader psychological impact such attacks can have on religious communities, public gatherings, and local security conditions.
Federal authorities stated the investigation remains focused on establishing a complete timeline of events, identifying all evidence connected to the subjects, and determining precisely why the shooting occurred.
“The FBI is determined to uncover all the facts associated with this incident and learn why this shooting occurred at the Islamic Center of San Diego,” Remily stated.
The FBI also urged members of the public to submit any videos, photographs, or visual evidence connected to the incident through the bureau’s digital tip portal as investigators continue collecting forensic and digital evidence tied to the case.
Authorities stated even seemingly minor details may assist investigators as they reconstruct movements, communications, and actions connected to the shooting.
“The FBI stands with the communities we serve, and our hearts weigh heavy for those killed and everyone who was subjected to this violence today,” Remily stated.
Federal authorities have not announced when additional investigative findings, victim identities, autopsy results, or forensic determinations may be released publicly as the investigation continues.

Tonight’s evening news stated that these teenagers met online. Sadly, this was the result of that meeting. It will be interesting to find out what the motive was in the shootings. The three men who died apart from the shooters seem to have stopped any penetration into the small on-site school.

There are so many strange reasons that people hurt or even want to kill others. We just had two shootings in my county since yesterday, each involving a fatality. The one that happened today was not too far from where I live. I’m still trying to get the full story on those shootings but a neighbor said the one just down the road was a break-in. The resident was the shooter from what I’ve heard. It is unusual though. Break-ins don’t usually happen at 1 pm in the afternoon.
