SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — The Federal Bureau of Investigation issued a public statement warning against the continued circulation of alleged suspect photographs connected to the Islamic Center of San Diego shooting investigation after officials confirmed at least one image spreading online was falsely identified.
According to FBI San Diego, a photograph circulating across online platforms and social media falsely identified an individual named Vazquez as being connected to the shooting investigation. Federal authorities stated the image was incorrect and warned that the rapid spread of unverified photographs and claims can cause direct harm to innocent individuals unrelated to the incident.
The FBI stated that both federal investigators and the San Diego Police Department are intentionally withholding photographs of the alleged shooting subjects during the active investigation process. Authorities emphasized that releasing or amplifying images connected to alleged attackers can unintentionally advance the ideological objectives behind violent acts by providing additional public exposure and notoriety.
Federal authorities urged members of the public, online users, and media organizations to refrain from sharing unverified images, screenshots, edited photographs, speculative claims, or unofficial identifications connected to the case.
Investigators warned that misinformation campaigns and viral misidentifications frequently emerge immediately following high-profile violent incidents, particularly across fast-moving online environments where unverified content can spread globally within minutes. Federal authorities noted that false identifications can damage reputations, expose innocent individuals to harassment or threats, interfere with investigative procedures, and contaminate witness reporting streams.
The FBI statement also reflects a broader law enforcement concern surrounding digital amplification following ideologically motivated violence and mass casualty investigations. Federal agencies have increasingly warned that online ecosystems surrounding major incidents often become saturated with manipulated content, fabricated suspect claims, false narratives, and digitally altered media before investigators complete formal evidence verification.
Authorities have not publicly released additional investigative details regarding the alleged shooting subjects at this stage of the investigation.
The FBI and San Diego Police Department continue investigating the incident. Federal authorities urged anyone with verified information, digital evidence, surveillance footage, or relevant investigative leads to contact law enforcement directly rather than distributing unconfirmed material online.

This is a good move by the FBI. There are many good reasons that information is being withheld at this time. People need to realize that until the authorities feel that it is the proper time to reveal what their investigation has discovered there are good reasons for the wait.
Thank you for this article.
You’re very welcome, Chris.
That is an important point, especially during active investigations involving violent incidents or potential ideological motivations. Law enforcement agencies often withhold certain information intentionally while investigators verify evidence, conduct interviews, analyze digital activity, and work to prevent misinformation from spreading publicly.
Premature releases, misidentified individuals, or unverified online claims can create serious problems for both investigators and innocent people.
Cases involving highly emotional incidents can cause information to spread extremely fast online, especially before authorities complete the evidence verification process. That is why federal investigators tend to move carefully before publicly releasing identities, photographs, or investigative details tied to ongoing cases.
Thank you again for reading and for taking the time to comment, Chris. I hope you have a great day and a great week ahead. 😎
You’re welcome, John, and thank you for this good reply. So many cases are highly emotional incidents these days and I’m sure that because this shooting took place at a religious institution that it would land squarely in that category.
It makes sense to handle cases like this very carefully and anyone messing with false information or leaks of information should be held accountable>
Thank you for your kind words, John. I hope you have a great weekend!
