Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York have charged Michele Spagnuolo, a Google software engineer accused of exploiting confidential internal company data to generate more than $1.2 million in profits through trades placed on the prediction market platform Polymarket.
According to the federal complaint, Spagnuolo allegedly operated under the alias “AlphaRaccoon” while using privileged access inside Google to obtain confidential nonpublic information connected to the company’s internal “Year in Search” analytics before the information became publicly available.
Federal authorities charged Spagnuolo with commodities fraud, wire fraud, and money laundering. Prosecutors stated the activity involved deliberate misuse of Google’s internal systems, confidential trend analysis tools, cryptocurrency-based financial transactions, and attempts to conceal the origin of trading proceeds through blockchain-related transfers and privacy-oriented crypto services.
The complaint states that Spagnuolo worked as a software engineer at Google since approximately 2014 and had access to internal data infrastructure containing commercially sensitive information tied to Google’s annual “Year in Search” campaign. Federal investigators stated the internal systems were clearly marked with “Google Confidential” warnings and restricted access protections.
According to investigators, Google’s “Year in Search” campaign carries major commercial value because it drives global media attention, user engagement, advertising revenue, marketing exposure, and strategic brand positioning tied to search activity trends across the platform. Prosecutors also stated that the confidentiality surrounding the annual rankings is considered highly valuable inside the company due to the financial and strategic importance of the coordinated public release.
Federal investigators stated that after accessing Google’s confidential internal data, Spagnuolo used the “AlphaRaccoon” account on Polymarket to place predictive wagers tied directly to the company’s unreleased search trend rankings for 2025. Authorities stated the bets involved which individuals would rank among Google’s most searched people of the year before the official publication of the data.
According to the complaint, prosecutors traced approximately $2.75 million in cryptocurrency-backed wagers tied to Google-related prediction markets between October and December 2025. Federal authorities stated the account ultimately generated approximately $1.2 million in profits once Google publicly released the Year in Search rankings and the prediction markets resolved.
Investigators stated the scheme relied heavily on Polymarket’s event-based trading system, where users speculate on future outcomes using cryptocurrency-denominated binary contracts. Authorities stated Spagnuolo exploited confidential knowledge unavailable to ordinary market participants in order to place highly profitable trades with unusually favorable odds.
The complaint outlines several examples where investigators stated Spagnuolo accessed confidential Google search trend data shortly before placing targeted wagers involving public figures including Kendrick Lamar, Pope Leo XIV, d4vd, Bianca Censori, Jimmy Kimmel, Tyler Robinson, and Donald Trump. Prosecutors stated many of the positions were placed against prevailing market expectations at the time.
Federal investigators also stated Spagnuolo attempted to conceal portions of the operation after online communities began speculating that the “AlphaRaccoon” account belonged to a Google insider. According to the complaint, the account name was removed from the platform and replaced with an alphanumeric wallet identifier after public suspicion intensified. Authorities further stated cryptocurrency transfers were routed through swapping services and privacy-oriented blockchain infrastructure designed to obscure ownership trails and transaction origins.
The case reflects expanding federal scrutiny involving insider trading activity tied to prediction markets, cryptocurrency ecosystems, and proprietary data access inside major technology corporations. Unlike traditional insider trading cases centered around stock purchases or options contracts, this investigation focuses on event-driven speculative platforms where confidential information can potentially be converted into large profits outside conventional securities exchanges.
Federal authorities continue warning that internal access privileges inside major technology firms represent significant insider threat risks due to the commercial value attached to search analytics, behavioral trend modeling, artificial intelligence systems, advertising infrastructure, proprietary forecasting models, and unreleased corporate data.
Spagnuolo, 36, an Italian citizen residing in Switzerland, appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Sarah Netburn in Manhattan federal court.
If convicted, Spagnuolo faces up to 10 years in prison on the commodities fraud charge and up to 20 years in prison on both the wire fraud and money laundering charges. Federal authorities emphasized that the complaint contains allegations only and that Michele Spagnuolo is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Thomas Burnett, Ryan B. Finkel, and Allison Nichols are prosecuting the case through the Southern District of New York’s Securities and Commodities Fraud Task Force.
