HOUSTON — A 35-year-old Mexican national who had previously been removed from the United States has been sentenced to 264 months in federal prison after pleading guilty to robbery, carjacking, brandishing a firearm, and illegal reentry following a violent series of crimes in Houston.
Jose Luis Reyes-Martinez pleaded guilty on July 10. U.S. District Judge Sim Lake sentenced him to 22 years in federal prison. Because Reyes-Martinez is unlawfully present in the United States, he is expected to face removal proceedings after completing his prison sentence.
The sentencing followed conduct that began on September 9, 2023, when Reyes-Martinez entered the Fiesta Supermarket on Airline Drive in Houston armed with a handgun. He brandished the firearm at two employees, forced one of them into a frozen meat locker, demanded cash, and fled the store on a bicycle.
After leaving the supermarket, Reyes-Martinez broke into a nearby residence and held a family at gunpoint for several hours. He tied up one of the occupants, sexually assaulted a woman while again brandishing the firearm, and later stole the family’s vehicle.
At sentencing, the court heard additional evidence concerning the sexual assault and the threats made during the home invasion.
Judge Lake also noted that the victim continues to suffer trauma as a result of Reyes-Martinez’s actions.
Forensic analysis of a condom recovered from the assault linked Reyes-Martinez to the crime.
The case also included a prior immigration history. Authorities first encountered Reyes-Martinez in Arizona in 2012 after he unlawfully entered the United States. He was subsequently removed from the country. Law enforcement later located him in Houston on October 21, 2023.
The federal case ultimately resulted in a guilty plea covering robbery, carjacking, brandishing a firearm, and illegal reentry.
In imposing the 264-month sentence, the court noted the seriousness of Reyes-Martinez’s offenses, including his threats to harm the victim’s children if she did not remain silent during the assault.
The FBI and Houston Police Department conducted the investigation. Assistant U.S. Attorney Francisco J. Rodriguez prosecuted the case for the Southern District of Texas.
Reyes-Martinez will now serve his 22-year federal sentence before facing expected immigration proceedings.
