FBI NEWARK WARNS OF SOPHISTICATED FEDERAL AGENT IMPERSONATION SCAM USING SPOOFED NUMBERS AND FAKE OFFICE SETTINGS

NEWARK, N.J. — The FBI Newark Field Office is warning the public about a more sophisticated version of a long-running government impersonation scam in which criminals pose as federal law enforcement agents and use spoofed agency phone numbers, real agent names, and a staged virtual meeting to make fraudulent demands appear authentic.

According to the FBI, victims in New Jersey have reported criminals impersonating personnel from the FBI, Drug Enforcement Administration, and U.S. Secret Service. The underlying fraud method has existed for years, but the newest variation is designed to defeat the verification steps people would normally use to determine whether a government contact is legitimate.

The scammers are spoofing the telephone numbers of actual federal law enforcement field offices. Caller ID spoofing allows a criminal to manipulate the number displayed on a victim’s phone so that an incoming call appears to originate from a legitimate government office. The scammers may also introduce themselves using the names of real federal agents, creating a second layer of apparent legitimacy.

That combination can make the scheme especially convincing. If a victim independently calls the field office and asks whether an agent with that name works there, the answer may be yes. That only confirms the existence of the real agent, not that the original caller was actually that person. FBI Newark says some victims have also been unable to reach someone directly at the field office and have treated the apparently legitimate caller ID as enough proof that the contact was genuine.

In one reported case, a fraudster went further by using an online virtual meeting platform and staging the background to resemble an FBI office. The setting included a desk, an FBI seal, and a man wearing a suit. The visual presentation was intended to reinforce the appearance that the victim was communicating with legitimate federal law enforcement.

The tactic relies heavily on social engineering. A legitimate-looking phone number, the name of an actual agent, official-looking seals, professional clothing, and a staged office environment can create the appearance of verification without providing any real proof of identity. The FBI is warning the public not to treat any of those elements as confirmation that the person making contact is a federal agent.

FBI Newark is advising anyone who receives suspicious contact to independently locate the official phone number for the agency and call it directly. The person should explain that they believe they may be the target of an impersonation scam and ask whether the named agent actually attempted to contact them. If the local field office cannot be reached, the FBI recommends contacting the agency’s main office or established national telephone number.

FBI Newark advises the public never to send money to anyone claiming to be a federal law enforcement agent.

If a fraudster uses a virtual meeting platform, FBI Newark recommends taking photographs or recording the video and submitting the material to tips.fbi.gov.

The FBI’s latest warning is significant because the scheme specifically targets the public’s instinct to verify suspicious government contact. Criminals are now attempting to manipulate that verification process itself by combining spoofed agency numbers with real names and highly convincing visual staging.

The FBI’s guidance is therefore more specific than simply checking caller ID or confirming that an agent exists. Verification should establish whether the actual agency and actual agent initiated the contact.

Anyone who cannot independently confirm the communication should end the interaction and contact the agency through an official channel.

The FBI can be reached at 1-800-CALL-FBI. People who encounter a suspected fraudster using a virtual meeting platform are also encouraged to preserve the interaction and report it to the Bureau.

The warning from FBI Newark is centered on one basic point: authenticity cannot be established by appearance alone. A correct phone number, a real agent’s name, an FBI seal, or a convincing office background can all be copied or manipulated.

The safest response is to stop the contact, verify it independently, and never send money simply because the person on the other end appears to know the right names or display the right government credentials.
