Anchorage Man Sentenced to Federal Prison in Child Exploitation Case Involving AI-Generated Abuse Material and Virtual Reality Plans

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — An Anchorage man has been sentenced to federal prison after admitting to receiving and distributing child sexual abuse material, including AI-generated obscene images involving children and plans to use virtual reality technology to view abusive content.

Federal authorities announced that Anthaney O’Connor, 32, of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced to 70 months in federal prison followed by 20 years of supervised release after previously pleading guilty to receipt of child pornography, federally identified as child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

According to federal court records, O’Connor entered his guilty plea on July 31, 2025.

Investigators stated the case involved the receipt, possession, and distribution of CSAM depicting prepubescent children. Federal prosecutors further stated O’Connor communicated with another offender who at the time was an active-duty Airman stationed at Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson in Alaska.

According to court documents, the two discussed plans to view child sexual abuse material together using virtual reality systems designed to simulate immersive viewing environments.

Federal authorities stated O’Connor described methods for using photographs of real children to create sexually explicit manipulated content for use inside virtual reality systems. Prosecutors stated the conversations demonstrated efforts to create simulated abuse experiences using digitally altered imagery and advanced technological tools.

Investigators additionally discovered O’Connor possessed multiple AI-generated obscene visual depictions involving child sexual abuse imagery.

Federal officials stated the case reflects growing concerns surrounding the criminal misuse of artificial intelligence technologies in child exploitation investigations. Law enforcement agencies nationwide have increasingly warned that AI image generation tools, deepfake systems, and advanced digital manipulation software are rapidly becoming part of online exploitation networks involving child abuse material.

Authorities also stated O’Connor distributed child sexual abuse material to other individuals.

Federal officials described the conduct as part of a broader and evolving threat environment where emerging technologies are increasingly being exploited to facilitate illegal sexual exploitation offenses involving minors.

The investigation involved the FBI Anchorage Field Office and the United States Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI).

The case was prosecuted by Trial Attorney McKenzie Hightower of the Department of Justice Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section along with Assistant U.S. Attorney Mac Caille Petursson for the District of Alaska.

Federal officials stated the prosecution was conducted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative focused on combating online child exploitation, identifying offenders, and protecting child victims from internet-based abuse networks.

Assistant Attorney General A. Tysen Duva of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Michael J. Heyman for the District of Alaska, and FBI Anchorage Special Agent in Charge Matthew Schlegel all issued statements emphasizing continued federal enforcement efforts targeting child exploitation crimes involving artificial intelligence technologies, online distribution networks, and emerging digital platforms.
