Sacramento Man Charged After Allegedly Bringing Explosive Device Into Sacramento International Airport

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Federal authorities have charged a Sacramento man after investigators stated he attempted to bring an explosive device and multiple suspicious items through a security checkpoint at Sacramento International Airport before boarding a flight.

According to federal prosecutors, a criminal complaint filed in the Eastern District of California charges Kimani Osayande Jones, also known as Kimani Osayande Jackson, 49, of Sacramento, with unlawfully possessing explosive material in an airport.

Court documents state the incident occurred at approximately 9 p.m. on May 30, 2026, when Jones allegedly attempted to pass through a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at Sacramento International Airport.

Federal investigators stated Jones was wearing latex gloves and a scarf covering his face at the time he entered the checkpoint area.

According to the complaint, TSA screening personnel discovered an M-type explosive device inside Jones’ carry-on bag along with a torch lighter capable of igniting the device. Authorities also recovered a knife, scissors, and scissor blades, zip ties, and an aerosol can from the bag.

Investigators further stated Jones possessed five cellular phones. One of the devices allegedly contained a 15-minute timer prepared to activate, while another reportedly displayed a message from an unidentified number reading, “we will be awaiting your call.”

Law enforcement immediately detained Jones following the discovery.

Federal officials stated Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office bomb technicians along with an FBI Special Agent Bomb Technician safely removed and secured the explosive device from the airport.

According to federal court filings, subsequent testing determined the powder and fuse inside the device were viable and energetic. Investigators stated the device had the potential to cause injury if detonated.

Authorities further stated that if the explosive device had detonated near a window aboard a pressurized aircraft operating above 10,000 feet, the explosion had the potential to damage the aircraft and create a possible loss of cabin pressure.

The incident highlights continuing concerns surrounding aviation security and the ongoing threat posed by improvised explosive devices in transportation environments. Airports across the United States continue operating under extensive federal security protocols designed to identify weapons, explosives, incendiary devices, and prohibited materials before passengers enter secure boarding areas.

Federal authorities have not publicly disclosed a motive connected to the incident, and investigators have not announced whether additional individuals may have been involved.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department conducted the investigation.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Elliot Wong is prosecuting the case.

If convicted, Jones faces a maximum statutory penalty of five years in federal prison and a fine of up to $250,000. Federal officials stated all charges remain allegations, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
