NEW MEXICO — Federal authorities have announced a superseding indictment charging three New Mexico men in connection with an alleged multi-year human smuggling operation and a separate conspiracy involving the killing of a witness who reportedly provided information to law enforcement investigators.
According to the United States Department of Justice, a federal grand jury in the District of New Mexico returned the superseding indictment against Wilfrido Saenz, 29, Ignacio Jaramillo, 22, and Ismael Jaramillo, 35, all of New Mexico.
Federal prosecutors allege the defendants participated in a conspiracy to transport illegal aliens between June 2021 and April 2024 as part of a larger smuggling network operating within the Southwest border region. Court documents further allege that Saenz and Ignacio Jaramillo later conspired to retaliate against a witness in April 2024 after the individual reportedly provided law enforcement with information regarding the human smuggling operation.
Authorities stated the alleged retaliation resulted in the witness’s death.
Federal officials described the case as another example of the violence and intimidation tactics frequently associated with organized human smuggling operations and transnational criminal networks operating near the southern border.
The investigation was conducted through coordination between the FBI Albuquerque Field Office, Homeland Security Investigations, Joint Task Force Alpha, and the Homeland Security Task Force initiative involving numerous federal agencies targeting cartel-linked human smuggling and trafficking organizations.
According to federal authorities, Saenz, Ignacio Jaramillo, and Ismael Jaramillo are charged with conspiracy to transport illegal aliens. Saenz and Ignacio Jaramillo are additionally charged with conspiracy to retaliate against a witness resulting in death. Prosecutors stated the witness retaliation charge carries a potential maximum sentence of life imprisonment if convicted.
Federal prosecutors also charged Saenz and Ignacio Jaramillo with two counts each of being felons in possession of firearms.
Court records cited by federal authorities indicate Saenz previously had convictions involving alien smuggling, fraudulent motor vehicle activity, and possession of drug paraphernalia. Authorities also stated Ignacio Jaramillo previously had felony convictions in New Mexico including aggravated assault on a peace officer with a deadly weapon and aggravated fleeing from law enforcement.
Federal officials stated human smuggling organizations continue generating major public safety concerns throughout the United States due to links involving organized criminal enterprises, cartel operations, violence, narcotics trafficking, weapons crimes, extortion, and exploitation of vulnerable individuals attempting illegal border crossings.
The Department of Justice stated Joint Task Force Alpha was created to target leaders, organizers, and facilitators connected to high-impact human smuggling and trafficking organizations operating throughout the Americas. Federal authorities stated the task force has produced hundreds of arrests, convictions, major prison sentences, and large asset forfeitures tied to transnational criminal organizations and cartel-linked smuggling networks.
Officials stated the Homeland Security Task Force initiative also focuses heavily on dismantling criminal organizations involved in cartel activity, violent transnational gangs, child exploitation crimes, human trafficking operations, and cross-border criminal enterprises impacting public safety throughout the United States.
The investigation involved assistance from numerous federal agencies including the FBI, HSI, DEA, ATF, IRS Criminal Investigation, U.S. Border Patrol, Customs and Border Protection, U.S. Marshals Service, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, Diplomatic Security Service, and additional federal law enforcement components.
Trial Attorney Danielle Hickman of the Justice Department’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section along with Assistant U.S. Attorneys Randy Castellano and Maria Armijo are prosecuting the case.
An indictment is merely an allegation of criminal conduct. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law beyond a reasonable doubt.
