ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A Twin Lakes man is facing federal charges following an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse involving a child under the age of 12, according to federal authorities.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of New Mexico announced that Donovan Tom Sherman, 51, of Twin Lakes, New Mexico, has been charged with aggravated sexual abuse and abusive sexual contact.
According to court documents, federal prosecutors allege that between approximately September 9, 2021, and October 6, 2023, Sherman engaged in sexual acts with a minor who had not yet reached the age of 12 years.
Federal authorities stated the alleged offenses occurred within Indian Country, resulting in federal jurisdiction over the case.
Sherman, an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, made his initial court appearance and was ordered released under court-imposed conditions pending further proceedings. A trial date has not yet been scheduled.
If convicted, Sherman faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 30 years in federal prison and could receive a sentence of up to life imprisonment.
Crimes involving the sexual abuse of children remain among the highest-priority investigations conducted by federal law enforcement agencies. Federal authorities continue emphasizing the importance of cooperation between tribal, federal, state, and local agencies when investigating crimes involving children occurring within tribal jurisdictions.
The case was investigated by the Gallup Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office with assistance from the Navajo Nation Police Department and the Navajo Department of Criminal Investigations.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meg Tomlinson is prosecuting the case.
The prosecution is being conducted as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide Department of Justice initiative focused on combating child exploitation, child sexual abuse, online predation, and crimes committed against children.
Project Safe Childhood combines federal, tribal, state, and local resources to identify offenders, prosecute crimes involving child exploitation, and assist in protecting vulnerable victims.
Federal authorities continue encouraging anyone with information regarding crimes involving children to report suspected abuse to law enforcement immediately.
The indictment contains allegations of criminal conduct. Sherman is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.

The evil of this type of thing always hits me when I read something like this. The next thing I usually think of is: “Where were the parents of this child?” As this crime seems to have gone on for some time, a lifetime in a young child’s life, where were the parents and who was responsible for the child’s safety? In the times we are living in when stories like this are constantly in the news, one would think that care givers would be much more cautious with their children. I pray that this child gets the help they will need in the upcoming years and, if found guilty, this man needs to face the severity of his crimes.

Cases that involve allegations of abuse against children are always difficult to read.
As for the circumstances surrounding the child and those responsible for their care, there are often many details that are not publicly available during an ongoing case. What is clear is that protecting children remains one of the most important responsibilities shared by families, caregivers, communities, and law enforcement agencies.
