FUGITIVE CONVICTED CHILD MOLESTER CAPTURED AFTER NEARLY 10 MONTHS ON THE RUN

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. — A convicted child molester who disappeared before his sentencing hearing has been captured in Arizona after nearly 10 months as a fugitive, according to the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office and the FBI Sacramento Field Office.

Carl W. Cacconie was convicted by an El Dorado County jury on July 17, 2025, of six counts of committing lewd acts upon a child under the age of 14. His sentencing was scheduled for August 25, 2025.

Following the conviction, prosecutors requested that Cacconie be remanded into custody pending sentencing. The request was denied, allowing him to remain free on $1 million bail. Court-imposed conditions included surrendering his passport and wearing an electronic monitoring device.

Authorities reported that the monitoring device stopped transmitting on August 17, 2025. Investigators determined that Cacconie was last seen in San Francisco on August 22, 2025. On the day he was scheduled to be sentenced, family members informed the court that they had reported him missing after he allegedly left behind his phone, wallet, and a suicide note.

The disappearance launched a multi-agency effort to locate the convicted fugitive. Investigators from local, state, and federal agencies pursued leads for months as authorities worked to determine his whereabouts.

On May 14, 2026, a federal arrest warrant was issued in the Eastern District of California charging Cacconie with Unlawful Flight to Avoid Confinement. Federal authorities said the warrant expanded available resources and investigative efforts aimed at locating and apprehending him.

After an extensive joint investigation, authorities located Cacconie in Scottsdale, Arizona. At approximately 9 a.m., members of the FBI Phoenix Desert Hawk Fugitive Task Force apprehended him without incident. The task force is composed of FBI special agents, deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, and agents from the U.S. Border Patrol.

Cacconie is expected to make his initial court appearance in Arizona before being extradited back to California, where he will face sentencing for the crimes for which he was convicted.

“We never stopped fighting for justice in this case. We are deeply grateful to our federal partners, whose collaboration was invaluable in locating and apprehending Cacconie. While nothing can erase the harm caused, we hope today’s outcome offers a measure of peace to Cacconie’s survivor and family, knowing that he will now finally be held accountable and sentenced for his crimes,” said El Dorado County District Attorney Vern Pierson.

“Carl Cacconie underestimated law enforcement and our commitment to ensuring justice for those impacted by his crimes,” said FBI Sacramento Acting Special Agent in Charge Brian Tosh. “Our task force officer with the El Dorado County District Attorney’s Office relentlessly pursued leads and worked closely with FBI Sacramento, FBI San Francisco, and FBI Phoenix field offices to ensure every possible tool, technique, and resource, was leveraged to locate and safely apprehend this convicted criminal.”

Officials thanked members of the public who assisted during the nearly 10-month search and expressed appreciation to the survivor and her family for their patience throughout the investigation.
