ILLEGAL ALIEN AND TEXAS MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR ALIEN SMUGGLING AND ASSAULTING FEDERAL OFFICERS

LAREDO, Texas — Two men have been sentenced to federal prison after admitting to alien smuggling offenses and assaults on federal law enforcement officers during separate incidents near the U.S.-Mexico border in South Texas.

U.S. District Judge Diana Saldana sentenced Adrian Isaac Pimentel-Garcia, a 20-year-old Mexican national unlawfully present in the United States, and Juan Carlos Lopez Jr., 24, of Laredo, to 36 months in federal prison following their guilty pleas to alien smuggling and assaulting federal officers.

Both defendants entered guilty pleas on March 3 in separate cases involving the transportation and guidance of illegal aliens into the United States as well as assaults against Border Patrol agents performing their official duties.

According to federal authorities, the incidents occurred on consecutive days in December 2025 and involved attempts to evade law enforcement while smuggling illegal aliens near Laredo, a major corridor for illegal immigration and human smuggling activity along the southern border.

During sentencing proceedings, the court heard statements from the victimized federal agents, who described the physical and professional impact the incidents had on them. Despite those effects, the victims also expressed forgiveness toward the defendants.

Judge Saldana noted that the actions involved significant risks to both law enforcement officers and the individuals being smuggled. In Lopez’s case, the court stated that the incident could have resulted in the death of an agent, a smuggled alien, or Lopez himself.

According to court records, Border Patrol agents encountered a group of illegal aliens on Dec. 5, 2025, shortly after they crossed the Rio Grande into the United States near south Laredo.

Federal authorities stated that agents located the group in a nearby residential area where individuals were climbing fences surrounding private homes in an effort to evade detection.

Investigators determined that Pimentel-Garcia was guiding the group through the area.

According to prosecutors, Pimentel-Garcia attempted to escape by climbing onto the roof of a residence. When a Border Patrol agent attempted to stop him, authorities stated that Pimentel-Garcia jumped from a fence and struck the agent in the face with a kick, knocking the officer to the ground.

Federal authorities reported that Pimentel-Garcia then attempted to flee on foot before additional agents moved in and took him into custody.

Law enforcement also apprehended the three illegal aliens he was guiding into the United States.

Following completion of his prison sentence, Pimentel-Garcia is expected to face removal proceedings because he is not a U.S. citizen.

The day before the Pimentel-Garcia incident, Border Patrol agents encountered Juan Carlos Lopez Jr. near southwest Laredo as he picked up illegal aliens who had recently crossed the Rio Grande.

According to court documents, agents attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Lopez fled, initiating a pursuit.

Federal authorities stated that Lopez drove from paved roadways onto dirt roads before reaching an area ending near a cliff.

When an agent positioned a patrol vehicle behind Lopez’s vehicle and exited to make an arrest, prosecutors said Lopez accelerated directly toward the agent.

The agent was able to avoid being struck, but authorities reported that Lopez collided with another Border Patrol vehicle, causing injuries to a federal officer.

According to investigators, Lopez then abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot. Law enforcement quickly apprehended Lopez and took seven smuggled aliens into custody.

Judge Saldana later noted the potentially deadly consequences of the incident while imposing sentence.

Federal authorities continue to identify human smuggling organizations and individual smugglers operating along the Southwest Border as significant public safety concerns. Smuggling operations frequently place migrants, law enforcement personnel, and members of the public at risk through vehicle pursuits, assaults, dangerous transportation methods, and attempts to evade apprehension.

The FBI and U.S. Border Patrol conducted the investigations. Assistant U.S. Attorney Manuel A. Cardenas Jr. prosecuted both cases.

The prosecutions were carried out as part of Operation Take Back America, a Department of Justice initiative focused on combating illegal immigration, dismantling transnational criminal organizations, and targeting individuals involved in violent criminal activity connected to border-related offenses.
