PITTSBURGH, Pa. — An Imperial, Pennsylvania, man has been sentenced to three years in federal prison after admitting to possessing a Glock pistol equipped with an illegal machinegun conversion device during a law enforcement operation.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Pennsylvania, U.S. District Judge Mark R. Hornak sentenced Ja’Shon Spencer, 22, on June 17, 2026, to 36 months in federal prison followed by two years of supervised release.
Federal prosecutors said Spencer possessed a Glock semiautomatic handgun equipped with a machinegun conversion device, commonly known as a “Glock switch,” during a drug transaction involving undercover law enforcement officers on June 16, 2025.
Machinegun conversion devices are designed to modify semiautomatic firearms so they can fire continuously with a single pull of the trigger. Under federal law, the conversion device itself is classified as a machinegun, and a firearm equipped with such a device is also legally considered a machinegun.
Federal authorities have increasingly identified machinegun conversion devices during criminal investigations across the United States. The devices are often small enough to fit in a pocket and can be installed on certain firearms in a matter of seconds, dramatically increasing a weapon’s rate of fire.
According to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, firearms equipped with conversion devices can discharge multiple rounds per second, making them significantly more difficult to control and increasing the risk of injury or death during criminal incidents.
The Department of Justice has prioritized investigations involving machinegun conversion devices in recent years as law enforcement agencies continue reporting increased recoveries of illegally modified firearms during narcotics investigations, gang investigations, violent crime cases, and firearm trafficking operations.
Assistant United States Attorney Kelly M. Locher prosecuted the case.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.
The case was prosecuted as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods, a federal initiative that coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement resources to combat violent crime, firearm offenses, and repeat offenders.
Federal law generally prohibits the possession, manufacture, transfer, or sale of machineguns and machinegun conversion devices except under limited circumstances authorized by law. Violations can result in substantial prison sentences, fines, forfeiture of firearms, and extended periods of supervised release.

I know little about these illegal machinegun conversion devices. But, I did look them up and as I thought “they cause firearms to operate at speeds exceeding military-grade automatic weapons, making them incredibly difficult to control and prone to mechanical failures.” I thought that jamming might be an issue since the guns are not designed for these devises. Still, I can understand why this is such an important issue. One way or another, they make guns very unsafe.
I don’t know how they come up with sentences for things like this but I’m sure they look at the violator’s prior record. I hope this person never messes with this type of thing again.

One of the major concerns surrounding these conversion devices is that they alter how the firearm was originally designed to operate, which is a concern when it comes to people with bad intentions. As you noted, that can create reliability and controllability concerns, particularly when a firearm is modified beyond its original design specifications. Most law-abiding citizens follow the law and do not convert them, even though firearms capable of automatic fire have long existed for military and law enforcement use. It is also worth noting that conversion devices and conversion methods are not unique to a single firearm platform and have existed in various forms for many years.
As for sentencing, federal courts generally consider a variety of factors, including the nature of the offense, the circumstances of the case, criminal history, federal sentencing guidelines, and other information presented to the court before determining an appropriate sentence.
