NEW YORK MAN INDICTED IN ALLEGED AI-GENERATED CYBERSTALKING CAMPAIGN TARGETING GEORGIA COLLEGE STUDENT

ATLANTA, Ga. — A New York man is facing a federal cyberstalking charge after prosecutors allege he carried out a months-long online harassment campaign involving fake social media profiles, AI-generated nude images, spoofed accounts, and racist messages targeting a Georgia college student.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Georgia, Anthony Belford, 21, of New York, appeared in federal court on June 10, 2026, after a federal grand jury returned an indictment on June 3 charging him with one count of cyberstalking.

Federal prosecutors allege that between January and March 2025, Belford devised and executed a scheme using fraudulent social media and email accounts to harass, intimidate, and cause substantial emotional distress to the victim.

According to court documents, Belford allegedly created fake social media accounts and used them to spread false information within the victim’s community, portraying the victim as racist while also sending racist and derogatory messages to student organizations while impersonating the victim.

Prosecutors further allege that Belford repeatedly created and distributed AI-generated nude images depicting the victim. Authorities allege he established fraudulent social media profiles that appeared to belong to the victim and used those accounts to circulate the images online.

Federal authorities also allege Belford attempted to increase the reach of the campaign by using spoofed accounts on an online forum to direct community members to fabricated content and false profiles distributed across multiple social media platforms.

The case comes as law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the growing use of artificial intelligence technologies in criminal activity, including online impersonation, harassment campaigns, fraud schemes, and the creation of nonconsensual intimate imagery.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case.

Federal officials noted that cyberstalking offenses can involve the use of electronic communications, social media platforms, email services, online forums, or other digital technologies to harass, threaten, intimidate, monitor, or cause substantial emotional distress to another individual.

Authorities also emphasized that sharing or threatening to share intimate images without consent, including AI-generated images, may violate federal law. Victims are encouraged to report such conduct to local law enforcement and the FBI.

An indictment is merely an allegation. Anthony Belford is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
