FBI, FEDERAL PARTNERS WARN DRONE OPERATORS OF TEMPORARY FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS DURING SAIL250 MARYLAND EVENTS

BALTIMORE, Md. — Federal authorities are warning drone operators that temporary flight restrictions will be in effect across portions of the Baltimore area during SAIL250 Maryland and Airshow Baltimore events scheduled to take place from June 24 through June 30.

According to the FBI Baltimore Field Office, temporary flight restrictions will cover areas surrounding the Baltimore Inner Harbor, Fells Point, North Locust Point, Under Armour Pier, Baltimore Peninsula, and Martin State Airport. Officials warned that operating a drone within restricted airspace may result in federal criminal penalties, including substantial fines, imprisonment, and seizure of the aircraft.

Temporary flight restrictions, commonly known as TFRs, are established by the Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily limit air traffic within designated airspace for safety, security, or operational reasons. Restrictions can apply to traditional aircraft, helicopters, drones, and other unmanned aircraft systems depending on the specific requirements of the event.

Federal authorities stated that SAIL250 Maryland is expected to attract large crowds, visiting vessels, military personnel, aviation participants, cadets, midshipmen, and spectators throughout the week-long celebration. Officials said unauthorized drone operations could create hazards for aircraft, event participants, visitors, and critical infrastructure located throughout the event area.

The restrictions are intended to protect maritime operations, aviation activities, public gathering areas, power infrastructure, communications systems, and other sensitive locations associated with the event.

The FBI noted that it is authorized under federal law to employ counter-unmanned aircraft system capabilities to detect, track, assess, and mitigate unauthorized drone activity within restricted airspace. The bureau works in coordination with the Federal Aviation Administration and other federal, state, and local partners to enforce temporary flight restrictions during major public events.

Throughout SAIL250 Maryland, federal authorities will deploy specialized counter-UAS teams designed to identify unauthorized drone activity and support enforcement actions when necessary.

FBI Baltimore Special Agent in Charge Jimmy Paul stated that the bureau will utilize its investigative and intelligence resources to identify operators who violate temporary flight restrictions and pursue enforcement actions where appropriate.

U.S. Attorney Kelly O. Hayes for the District of Maryland also warned that operating a drone within restricted airspace during the event could result in federal prosecution.

The security effort also includes participation from the United States Coast Guard, which is assisting with maritime safety and security operations throughout the celebration. Officials stated that coordination between federal, state, and local agencies is designed to provide layered protection both on the water and in the air.

Drone operators are encouraged to review current flight restrictions before launching any unmanned aircraft. Federal authorities recommend using FAA-approved airspace awareness tools and reviewing active notices to airmen and temporary flight restriction notices before each flight.

Members of the public who observe unsafe or suspicious drone activity are encouraged to report it immediately to local law enforcement.

As one of the largest maritime celebrations scheduled in the region this year, SAIL250 Maryland will operate under enhanced security measures intended to protect participants, visitors, vessels, aircraft, and critical infrastructure throughout the event period.
