GREECE MAN SENTENCED TO FEDERAL PRISON FOR THREATENING FBI AGENT AND AGENT’S FAMILY

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Greece, New York man has been sentenced to federal prison after being convicted of threatening the family of an FBI Special Agent in what prosecutors described as an attempt to intimidate or retaliate against a federal law enforcement officer for performing official duties.

U.S. Attorney Michael DiGiacomo announced that Steven L. Ploof, 48, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Meredith A. Vacca to 14 months in federal prison following his conviction on a charge involving threats directed toward the immediate family of a federal law enforcement officer.

According to federal prosecutors, the case stemmed from an incident on September 15, 2025, when Ploof traveled to the Ogden residence of an FBI Special Agent and the agent’s family.

Court records indicate that Ploof placed two posterboard signs on the front porch of the residence. One sign reportedly contained the message “Corrupt FBI Agent!” while a second sign contained a threatening and vulgar statement directed toward the agent’s children.

Federal authorities stated that the incident was captured by a residential security camera system, which recorded Ploof placing the signs at the home.

The federal statute involved in the case is designed to protect federal law enforcement officers and their immediate family members from threats, intimidation, harassment, and retaliation connected to the performance of official duties. Federal prosecutors argued that threats directed at family members can be used as a means of pressuring, intimidating, or retaliating against officers carrying out law enforcement responsibilities.

Cases involving threats against federal agents are typically treated seriously by federal authorities because they can affect not only the safety of individual officers and their families but also broader law enforcement operations. Federal investigators frequently examine whether threats are intended to interfere with ongoing investigations, intimidate officers, discourage enforcement actions, or retaliate for previous official conduct.

The conviction highlights the legal protections afforded to federal agents and their families under federal law. While criticism of government agencies and public officials is generally protected by the First Amendment, federal law draws a distinction between protected speech and conduct that crosses into criminal threats, intimidation, or retaliation directed at law enforcement personnel and their family members.

The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Greece Police Department, and the Ogden Police Department.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Everardo A. Rodriguez prosecuted the case on behalf of the federal government.

Ploof has now been sentenced to serve 14 months in federal prison.
