ROCHESTER, N.Y. — A Greece, New York, man has been sentenced to federal prison after being convicted of threatening the immediate family of a Federal Bureau of Investigation special agent in an effort to retaliate against or interfere with the agent’s official duties.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of New York, Steven L. Ploof, 48, of Greece, New York, was sentenced by U.S. District Judge Meredith A. Vacca to serve 14 months in federal prison after being convicted of threatening to assault a member of the immediate family of a federal law enforcement officer with the intent to impede the officer in the performance of official duties or to retaliate against the officer for performing those duties.
Federal prosecutors stated that the incident occurred on September 15, 2025, when Ploof traveled to the Ogden, New York, residence of an FBI Special Agent and the agent’s family.
According to court records, Ploof placed two posterboard signs on the front porch of the residence. One sign read, “Corrupt FBI AGENT!” The second sign contained a threatening message directed at the agent’s children that stated, “I Want To (expletive) Your Kids!”
Authorities stated that Ploof’s actions were captured by a residential security camera system, providing investigators with video evidence documenting him placing both signs at the residence.
Federal law provides enhanced protections for federal law enforcement officers and their immediate family members by making it a crime to threaten or intimidate them with the intent to interfere with official duties or retaliate against them for carrying out those responsibilities. Such statutes are intended to protect the integrity of federal investigations and safeguard public officials and their families from intimidation, harassment, and retaliation.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Everardo A. Rodriguez.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation under the direction of Special Agent-in-Charge Allen D. Davis II, with assistance from the Greece Police Department under the direction of Acting Chief Ryan Parina, the Ogden Police Department under the direction of Chief Travis Gray, and the Orleans County Sheriff’s Office under the direction of Sheriff Christopher Bourke.
